Oil Filter Relocation Options
Well, I had a pesky engine oil leak and found the cause...a cracked oil filter housing, previous owner tightened up the allen head plug too tightly apparently. I have a post in the FS/WTB board to see if I can track one down but it looks like i'll need to explore other options. What do you guys suggest for relocation kits? MMR, CG, etc? How difficult is the install? Anyone have any pictures? Just weighing my options at this point. Thanks!

Re: Oil Filter Relocation Options
Another thought I had...the piece is cast aluminum so I can weld it and try and salvage it. What purpose does that plug serve? Is it just to drain the oil out of that housing? My thought it I'll weld that crack, then pull the plug and weld the hole shut preventing any future leaking issues? Thoughts?

Re: Oil Filter Relocation Options
that plug is a place to add an additional sensor - either aftermarket oil pressure or oil temp

Re: Oil Filter Relocation Options
Mine leaks too, i want it to be that stupid plug but i know in the back of my mind its probably the gasket. I just dont want to remove it and have to burp the coolant system lol.

Re: Oil Filter Relocation Options
Ya, I'm not looking forward to it as this will be my first time doing it on one of these 4v's. On the bright side the adapter itself and gasket are pretty easy to change. I was able to find a good used one from another member, but I'm still going weld up my cracked one and hang on to it just in case.
Any tips or suggestions other that what has already been covered in other threads on burping the coolant system are greatly appreciated!!! |

Re: Oil Filter Relocation Options
welding that POS pot metal can be pretty tricky.

Re: Oil Filter Relocation Options
If you put the stock adapter back on make sure you use a Fel-Pro 70801 gasket. The auto parts store will give you the wrong gasket almost 100% of the time. If you use the gasket they have listed in the computer it will drain all your oil right out on the floor when you start the car.

Re: Oil Filter Relocation Options
Thanks for the heads up on the gasket. It was my understanding the gasket is re-use able assuming it's in good condition, it wasn't leaking at all prior and looks to be in great shape (yes I realize they're cheap so I should just replace it).
And you're right, it's going to be a PITA to weld it, but just for a "back-up" I think it's worth having it around. Might be helpful to someone else in the future too as they're pretty hard to find? |

Re: Oil Filter Relocation Options
it took a while to get one stock but I was able to get a brand new one from Ford ($ though)
the gasket might be re-usable but if it leaks a couple quarts of synthetic oil on the ground costs more than the gasket
