Looks like I'm out for awhile!!

Well. I've been dealing with a bad left knee for a few years now, had orthoscopic surgery two years ago. Now the knee has gotten to the point where I can't even get in the car, much less push the clutch in!! Looks like it may be awhile before I can bang gears again. Headed back to the doctor today for repairs. Last time he gave me a cortisone shot which hurt like hell and only helped for two days. I'm pretty sure there is a knee replacement in my future.

Re: Looks like I'm out for awhile!!

best wishes on your recovery

feedback from a couple of colleagues that have had knee replacement is the first two or three days after surgery are pretty painful. after that it's a lot better, and when you can bang gears again it will be worth it.

Re: Looks like I'm out for awhile!!

Had a similar problem with tendinitis in my shift arm a few years back. I just chalked it up to old age and kept on shifting. Finally it had really gotten bad so I went to the Doc. He diagnosed is as tendonitis which is advanced or chronic tendinitis. This time I had to have painful therapy where they broke down the tissue and let it re-heal properly..... but after a while I could shift and again painlessly so it was worth it.

Hang in there Dean, and do what the Doc says.

Re: Looks like I'm out for awhile!!

hope they can find you some relief and dont be afraid to get a second opinion!

we had an employee a few years back that had both knees replaced and he was up and kicking *** again in no time, just make sure to do as they say. The second knee replacement he went back to driving and such before he should have and the recovery time on that knee was definitely longer

Re: Looks like I'm out for awhile!!

Go get it over with.
A good friend of mine did both of his knee's last year. As soon as the 1st one was strong enough he did the 2nd. He said it was the best thing he ever did for himself.

Good luck. We'll See you banging gears all the way to Carlisle next year.

Built auto time

Seriously though- best of luck and a speedy recovery. I have been fighting left knee ITB issues all year and it did its best to ruin my cycling season this year... I know how aggravating it can be!

Re: Looks like I'm out for awhile!!

Sorry to hear about your knee. If you have the surgery see if they can install a spring to assist in shifting. You'll feel better and shift faster. Almost like having a pair of Ked's sneakers with the red dot. You can jump higher and run faster if that red dot was on the back.
I notice my knee's are not like they use to be to. My arms seem to be getting stronger though due to having to pick myself up from a kneeling position so that's a plus. Seriously though you probably need the surgery and the pain can't be much worst that what you feel now. Good luck to you Dean and hope you're slamming gears soon.

Re: Looks like I'm out for awhile!!

Be careful, scratch that, be very careful with your choice of surgeon. My gf's mom just went through knee replacement earlier this year and her recovery has gone terribly wrong. She's worse off now than she was before and is getting second opinions and looking for a new doctor to re-do what the other guy did.

That being said, keep your head up and best wishes.

Re: Looks like I'm out for awhile!!

Thanks everyone!! I did go to a different doctor yesterday for a second opinion. Looks like they are going to try me on a new med for the knee and also secheduled a MRI. There may be a problem in my back which is causing the hip pain and this new medicine may reduce pain and swelling in the knee. Hope to be back in the Mach soon!!

Good luck with the knee. My wife had her knee replaced 11 months ago and thankfully she's in far better shape than she was before the replacement.

Re: Looks like I'm out for awhile!!

Update: Back MRI showed bulged disc causing pain in my lower lumbar and leg. Knee MRI showed arthritis, a tear meniscus and an ACL tear. Sure glad I went to the other doctor. She scheduled me right in for the MRIs and nice looking too!! Now back to the ortho surgeons for repairs!! Hope to be driving by next spring.

I had both the lower back disc repaired and the knee ACL replaced one after the other. If you think you hurt now wait till the PT starts .Make sure you do exactly what they say or alot more like I did.Good luck.
