Re: Trivia for today
That's the one...the '69 only 390 4V s-code big block! Good work all!
(There are a number of single year only engines that were available in the regular Mustangs that were derivitives of other similar sized engines; the D-code 64 1/4 289 4v, the '72 351-HO 4v, the '68 302 4v, the '68 390 2v and for the Shelbys; the 428-8V from '67 and the '68 only non-CJ 428 4v...)

On the shelby route, I have a simple one. What is the difference between the GT500 and Gt500KR of the same year - 1968? Bonus: What does the KR stand for, and Why did Shelby use it?

Re: Trivia for today
The sleeping monster under the hood is the difference between a KR and a non-KR GT-500 for '68. The KR sports a 428 Cobra Jet while the non-KR GT-500 uses a basic 428 P.I. motor...and of course the stripes. Also during the '68 model year a running change was made to the rear marker lights, from a true rectangular design to a design with more of a two angle side. There was also a running change made from Marchal fog lights to the Lucas fog lights. There was a recall for the changeover but not all cars were refitted.
The term KR stands for King of the Road and itwas used to promote the new, more powerful Shelby when word got to Ole' Shel that GM had planned on using that name for its more powerful Corvette. Being a smaller company and able to effect changes more quickly, the snake charmer got the word out and the stripes on before GM could act...and the rest is history...

Re: Trivia for today
For Today...
The famous Cobra Daytona Coupe is best remembered painted in Guards (or Guardsman) Blue. They also competed in white (Ford of France)as well as in red (Scudierra Filipinetti). But their first few months they were painted a lighter shade of blue. What was the name of that color blue? (Yeah, Bill, I finally figured it out...)

Re: Trivia for today
That would be the color. (This came about because there was a Daytona replica @ B'Ham done up in that color. Unique to say the least).
Although the '66 (and now '07) Shelby Mustangs are best known for being available for rent through Hertz, they were also available for rent other year(s). What other year(s)?

Re: Trivia for today
Where did you dig up that ancient post? The correct answer to the second part of the question is 'SS'. There were preproduction (mainly early press cars) cars made with 'SS' badging. Even the owners manual mentions 'SS' when refering to operation of the fog lamps. The first part was, of course, correct.
Still waiting on the newest questions answer...

Re: Trivia for today
When I worked at Schmerler Ford in Elk Grove Village, Illinois long, long ago,
our early 82 Mustang GT's (The Boss is Back!!) had "SS" badging on the hatch and the dash. There were several we got in that way. Hardly anyone remembers or believes me about it, but it happened. I was in new car prep dept. at the time. My understanding is that GM had a cow bout the "SS", so it went to GT.

Re: Trivia for today
The Hertz deal went throughout Shelby production after '66, so you could rent a snake until '70. The only year there was no Shelby Mustang at the rental counter was '65.
The '82 SS was for real, and even showed up in a road test (only showing the SS badging on the contents page) in PHR magazine. I know I've go that one...somewhere... At the Birmingham show there was a Mustang II Monroe Handler. It was one of the 'replicas' built based on the original comissioned by the Monroe shock company. How many total were built?

Re: Trivia for today
In the movie trailer for the upcoming 'I Am Legend', we see Will Smith driving a new Shelby GT-500. In the original movie which stared Charlton Heston, called 'The Omega Man', he also drove a Mustang.
What kind?

Re: Trivia for today
It was a 1970 Mustang, but for some reason I remember it as being a plain jane convertible.

Re: Trivia for today
Leave it to my buddy Bill to nail it! There were actually two powder blue '70 conv. used, one had white interior (as pictured by Bill), the other had a dark colored interior.

Re: Trivia for today
Are you sure? This is what I found on several websites:
Vehicle Identification Numbers Engine Codes 2.3L 1V 4cyl 88hp A 2.3L EFI 4cyl 205hp (SVO) W 3.8L EFI V-6 120hp 3 5.0L EFI/4V V-8 165/210hp (HO) M http://www.mustangspecs.com/years/85.shtml The auto's were basically a 2-barrel EFI and the 5-speeds had 4-barrels. I never saw or drove an automatic back then so I don't really know how well they ran. I do know the 4-barrel ran pretty good for it's time, I did drive several of them.
