Re: Rear Axle Driveline Vibration Damper

Same here, I took mine off when I did my pinion seal. Never noticed a difference but I have 4.10s. I heard something about how it was to help dampen for stock gears but I have no real evidence of that since I took it off my old mustang too and never had issues.

Glad you got a reply on this, I had mine go bad and posted question and pictures and never got an answer, guess I don't have to buy one now.

Re: Rear Axle Driveline Vibration Damper

Ford used the dampener with the stock gearing. When you change gears, 3.73 4.10's, etc., you can throw it away as the original balance is gone.

Huh?

It's a vibration damper. You'll have vibrations regardless of the gears you put in.

I recommend keeping it.

The driveshast spins at a certain speed with stock gears at 80mph, and when you put in 3.73, 4.10's or 4.56's, your driveshaft is spinning much faster at that same speed and the vibration likelihood increases.

Three things I recommend when you swap gears:

1. Index the driveshaft (if the markings on the flange are still evident..if not see information further below)
2. Upgrade to an aluminum driveshaft'
3. LEAVE the vibration damper on the vehicle.

More:

Vibration in the rear can be a huge pain in the rear (yes, pun)

Either the vibe will annoy you, or you'll have a leaking pinion seal. To index the driveshaft/and or if you've had gears put in and the mark on the pinion flange was not adhered to, might have worn off or is no longer visible, here is how to get it balanced.

Measure the lip as shown below with a dial indicator to get the highest point on the flange.

Field Balance

See the blue dot on the new pinion flange? That is the highest runout point.

The yellow mark on the driveshaft should line up with the flange mark.

Re: Rear Axle Driveline Vibration Damper

006, the only problem is trying to find a damper to replace. I had a rattle under the car we finally traced to the bushings in the damper were worn and it was vibrating on the the bracket. Have called various Ford dealers, no longer a part # and other places tell me it is obsolete. If you have a line on where to get one or a place that repairs them, please share, thanks!!

Re: Rear Axle Driveline Vibration Damper

That damper has to be one of, if not the most, common take-off part there is for these cars. 006 is the man for parts new and old. He will hook you up. You guys should check out his website. Speedconcepts.net. Best prices out there and one hell of a nice guy on top of it.

Re: Rear Axle Driveline Vibration Damper

I've driven my car for 2 years with no damper and have never had any vibration problems, leaking pinion seals etc. And this is with several highway trips at 80mph and several 100MPH+ 1/4 mile runs...
