LDC Cooling mod install.
Figured I would share my fun with this great mod.
Just got it in the mail today. I will install it tomorrow, with plenty of pictures. |

I will be doing my own version of the cooling mod on "R".
May be simpler, yet just as effective. And NO pulling the trans to do it. Will have to pull lower intake though...................

Couldn't get to it today....neighbor borrowed my extra jackstands for an xpipe install....took him 3 days!!! lol.

I would say a 4 out of 10, only because the trans would have to come out to do it. |

First thing I did was take out a drain plug on the block. It's a litle different on a Mach than the instructions due to our aluminum block.
Bad picture....but this is on the driver side rear of block. The small plug is the one that comes out...have a drain pan ready and it takes a 8mm allen socket. After you drain out the coolant....replace the plug with a little liquid teflon sealer to make sure it won't leak. Do not tighten this much more than a little past snug. You do not want to strip this out. |

Next....I disconnected the egr tube from the stock manifold and from the intake from up above. This needs to be able to be moved out of the way to
knock out the driver side freeze plug to install the new fitting. Once disconnected...it can be moved out of the way. It takes a 1 1/16 inch wrench. If your car is a dd or has some milage...spray this down with some solvent to aid in it's removal. Mine broke right loose. But my car has never seen any weather. |

I took a small chisel and ball peen hammer and tapped the freeze plug on the driver side head at the very top of the plug. A few sharp taps popped it out
sideways like this. Then I used some pliers and pulled it out. Do not pry or mar the freeze plug bore in the head. |

Wipe out the bore the freeze plug was in and then feel it with your finger....is it smooth? Clean? Ok then. EGR tube is movable...freeze plug out on driver side. Bore clean.
There is a bracket with two bolts tha must be loosened so the ear on the new driver side fitting will slide under the bracket and bolt flush to the head. One bolt is a 10mm and the other is a 13mm. No need to remove....just loosen a 1/4 inch and pull braket back to make room for ear to slide under. Couple pics: Bolt you see is the 10mm....this is driver side. 13mm is above it. |

The next step was to remove the 2 10mm bolts from the stock passenger side fitting. After those are out....I wiggeld the fitting straight out of the head. Took some small channel locks...squeezed the hose clamp and removed the stock fitting and tossed it aside.

I lubed the o ring on the new driver side fitting with antifreeze and slipped it into the frezze plug bore. Tight fit....but easy enough. I left this loose for now...note ear that fits around 10mm bolt we loosened earlier. This ear goes
under the bracket. |

Here is the passenger side fitting in place. lube the o-ring with antifreeze and the hose ends...pop the fitting on the heater core line and slide it up...grip the clamp and re-install it. Pop the fitting in the head...and tighten the 2 10mm bolts. Gentle..no reason to be hercules on aluminum. snug. not too much.
I attache the hose on this side and tightened the clamp with an 8mm socket on a 1/4 drive ratchet. Don't crush the tube....but this one is important...so do not use a flat screwdriver....attach hose and clamp on driver side. Almost done. |

I rotated the driver side fitting so the ear is arounf the bolt...under the old braket and tightened it all up. You will need to switch to wrenches here...
10 an 13m again....socket won't get on the bolts now. Start the threads on the egr to manifold union...just start them and leave loose...now go and get the egr tube back into the intake....tighten it up, then go below and tighten the egr to manifold. Re-fill coolant. See threads here on that procedure. I can't start mine yet... so I will have to wait. |

There is a bracket that holds the wiring harness at the very top of the bellhousing. It's a huge pain in the *** and must be removed and discarded.
It only hinders trans re-install anyway. Chuck it. Notice how I have new blue crossover hose under wiring harness in last picture. This holds harness up and out of the way. Bonus. |

The driver side head on a 4 valve motor has a dead spot in the rear 2 cylinders #7 and #8 for coolant flow. It creates a hot spot that could lead to detonation with a supercharger or nitrous. Most 4 valve engine failures are
either ringland/piston damage or broken rod due to tuning issues leading to detonation or the air/fuel mixture igniting early while the piston is still on the compression stroke....piston is going up....flame front and gases expanding down....stresses the piston/rod was not designed to ever see= boom boom. This evens out coolant temps in the heads and is basically an insuarnace policy and peace of mind for my blower install. |

I really like doing installs and taking pictures to share. I will be doing alot more now I have a decent Camera and new laptop. Makes the whole picture thing a no brainer now. I would suggest this mod to anyone who has to have thier tranny out for any reason. I did alot of research and the apten cooling mod, evenflow and the others do not compare to this one. Fit, finish and design are superior. Make sure to fully understand the coolant re-fill procedure. |
