Best non drag radial for stock rims?

I'm trying to find the best non drag radial for stock wheels. I like the Nitto NT05, but the only option is 275/40/17. I know Nitto will run small but I'm searching for any other options. I don't care about mileage at all.

"Best" can mean a lot of things. What is the goal?

Mostly straight line traction. But it is ultimately a street car, so it will be on the highway and off ramps which is why I'm looking for something other than a drag radial. I dont care about how many miles I get out of them. Cost is not a major concern. Car will maybe see 2000 miles a year or less. The nitto nt05 seems ideal but then I'm putting a 275 tire on an 8 inch rim. (I've done this with a DR but not my every day set up)

I've read many threads regarding tire compound being more important than width. Seems like ideal size would be 255/45/17 but they dont make a nt05 in that size.

Car is a bolt on 5 speed if that matters.

Re: Best non drag radial for stock rims?

I still don't follow. Is this a dd or? A drag radial can handle an off ramp just fine. But if you just want a good street tire that wont cost what something like a michlin or perelli costs then id recommend the nitto 555.

245-45-17 is the perfect size for a stock wheel.

Re: Best non drag radial for stock rims?

I agree that the OE 245/45r17 works perfect. I still like the ride, handling and overall traction of the Hankook Evo V12. I'd probably look at some of the newer Michelin SuperSports, but for now I've got Cooper RS3s to put up with for the next 25k miles or so.
'Best' can mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people, so you have to decide what you want, and what you're willing to give up, to determine what's best for your needs.

Re: Best non drag radial for stock rims?

Michelin Pilots. I've run all sorts of tires on the Mach, and the Pilots were the best for overall traction.

Previous tires included the factory Gatorbacks, Bridgestone Potenza RE760's, BF Goodrich GForce Sports, BF Goodrich KDW II's, and Sumitomo HTR II's. Of these, the RE760's were the best and the Sumitomo's and Gatorbacks were the worst.

Re: Best non drag radial for stock rims?

I use M&H RaceMaster drag radials in the exact same size as our stock tires 245/45-R17 they work great at the track and no issues driving on them as the car is driven to the track and raced on same tires I just adjust the tire pressure.

Otherwise I like the Michelins like JDraper said...

Re: Best non drag radial for stock rims?

Another consideration might be the new-ish Firestone Firehawk Indy 500. I've heard very good things about them, and they're actually a re-issue of a Bridgestone Potenza RE-04. Just more reasonable.

Re: Best non drag radial for stock rims?

Well I ordered this set up...

275/40/17 Nitto NT05 for the rear

245/45/17 Nitto 555 G2 for the front

They were cheap enough I won't feel bad if I don't like them.

I'll post some pics and feedback once they are on. Not sure if I will switch them out now or spring time. It's almost winter here in Chicago

I got rid of my 1st Mach years ago after a divorce. Just picked up a Torch Red 04 5 speed with 11k miles and some bolt ons. I'm excited to have one back in my garage.

Why didn't you just run G2's all around? Oh, the G2's run wide. The 315 G2 was about a half inch wider than my 315 555R. I put a 285 on an 18x10 rim and it fit perfectly.

Re: Best non drag radial for stock rims?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that tire a summer tire?

I learned the hard way that summer tires S U C K on these cars. Zero traction unless it's a hot summer afternoon and the pavement is sizzling.

I see that you live in Chicago so your weather is even colder than mine. I have gone to the Nitto Motivo because it's offered in 315/35 for the rear and 275/40 for the front, and it has a rubber compound that works MUCH better in cool weather.

In fact, last Saturday night I raced some 392 Hemi cars and a 5.0 Coyote in 48 degree weather and these tires only spun slightly in 1st gear and stuck really well in 2nd and 3rd. On summer high performance tires I wouldn't have even attempted the races. It would have been worthless.

Re: Best non drag radial for stock rims?

This car won't see much cold weather.

However I will keep these suggestions in mind if these don't work well.
