big n little drivers...

Those that have gone from driving around town on wide front/rear tires and switching to big/little setup, how is the drivability? Is it so bad that you would rather just drive it to the track or is it acceptable?

I am thinking about Weld RTS S77B.

Re: big n little drivers...

I can't speak to the driveability of a Mach 1, but my 78 Malibu has always been driven to and from the track, car shows, and just pleasure cruising on 15x3 1/2 Greg Welds with 185/65/r15's on the front and 15x10 Greg Welds with 28X12.5 ET Streets (Bias ply) and I think it drives like normal. I wouldn't want to autocross it or drift with it, but to just drive around, it is not an issue. If it had street tires on the back, I wouldn't even mind driving it in the rain. FWIW.

Re: big n little drivers...

ok....all my mustangs had front runners and drag radials. I daily drove my 93 cobra for years...rain or shine..even a few snow days...lol

YOU cant dive into corners and cant stand on your brakes...BUT it is totally do-able. My Mach hasn't seen full sized rims in years and I do a lot of crusin (well not this year) but in the past I did.

Same here. Also watch out for potholes (NY).

No quick turns other than that I've never had an issue.

Re: big n little drivers...

Ya, I just have to drive normal around corners. I can't take the freeway on/off ramp curves at 70mph anymore. Have to use the recommended speed limit. Other than that, they are great. And I miss doing clutch dump uturns too.

Re: big n little drivers...

I am real hesitant because of my driving style around corners; I already run -1.2 camber and my tire wears even across the tread. It is a very expensive decision; I would hate to drop that much money and not like it.

I've been going back and forth for 2 months now and just cannot make a decision.

Re: big n little drivers...

those wheels are custom, why not buy as a 8inch wide wheel?? my weld rts 17x8 fronts weight only 17lbs and the invos only weight 4lbs more then m&h front runners!
so why skinnys up front on the street???to save 5lbs?? not worth it.
just yesterday someone pulled out in front of me, with skinnys, i would have locked them up right away!

Re: big n little drivers...

Good to know its not that bad although my intent would only be to drive to the track and back unless I find a money tree to buy a nice low profile trailer

Re: big n little drivers...

My only concern is the multi/thin spoke drag wheels seem to be the ones that break out in the center which is a big concern IMO.

Re: big n little drivers...

I drove my Fox for years on bigs and littles and never had any trouble. However, as others have said, it's dependent on your driving style.

Why are you looking at going with skinnies on the street?

I know the reality of swapping wheels; as soon as I put them on I will be to lazy to take them back off or at least drive it around for a while in between track days. I really do not drive it everyday anymore, but I do drive it at least twice a week.

Or, I may just give up on the idea completely and just buy a second set of rear drift wheels and put some hoosiers on them.
