OK, we know there were 4 Shelby convertibles built special in 1966, and it became a regular produciton option in 1968 remaining available until production totally ceased in 1971. For today, how many Shelby convertilbles were built in 1967 and what was unique in the striping?

There was only on e of these unique cars built, and it is listed in the SAAC Registry. It was recently on display at the Chicago Auto Show. The stripes on the rockers say 'EXP 500', like the Green Hornet coupe. It did not have the signature roll bar like its' '68-'70 brethern.

For today; on the '68-'70 Shelby convertibles there are two d-rings on top of the padded roll bar. What are these meant to be used for?

Surf board tie downs it is! A friend of mine had a surf board painted to match his Shelby so he could show the car with it strapped on the top...cool!

What was the name of the traveling show that toured the country in the late '60's showing off the Shelby vehicles at different Ford dealerships; GT-40, Cobra, GT-350? For those attending there was a slide show and talk by a moderator...I know, I went to one.

That had to be the famous Cobra Caravan.

They wish! I haven't opened that pile of mis-information since I unwrapped it at Christmas. If I had seen EXP 500 in it, I would have thought it was another mistake. Mustang Monthly had a great article on the Green Hornet some years ago, and it has been featured in a number of Shelby books and articles as well. Don't get me started on that book this early in the morning with fresh coffee in me!

For today; what size Ford engine was initially intended to be put in Shelby's Cobra? What size was actually first used and what was the name of the type of car that AC Ltd. supplied that actually became what we know as the Cobra? Bonus: What was the name of the type of car that became the Sunbeam Tiger once a V-8 was installed?

1: I think the 221
2: the 260
3: the ace
4: the sunbeam alpine

the owners of the 260 cobra's had the opportunity to bring their cars back to Shelby and have the 260 swapped for a 289. It is rare to find an original 260 now days.

I think I'm gonna let T.S. take over this thread...he seems to get 'em all right! Although 02Mach1 gets honorable mention for participation abouve and beyond the call of duty!

For today; the prototype of the 427 Cobra was raced by Ken Miles and was affectionately known as the 'Turd'. Why was it known as the fliptop Cobra and what size motor was in it?

Thanks but no thanks. I wouldn't even think of taking over your thread. I'll see if I can come up with some questions.
The front clip was in one piece and it tilted forward and the rear clip was also in one piece and it tilted rearward. The car ran only one race, I believe Nassau in '64', which it didn't finish. The motor was a special 390.

Crap, It has been like a week that this thread has been revived. Where have I been?

Last year of a 351? Well, I know they were offered as an H in the VIN for a 351-2v up until '73. 351-4v until '71 as an M. I'm not sure if a 4v was offered in '72 or '73 though. After that, Mustangs had the trusty 5.0L engine up until 1995 when the Cobra R was introduced, for that year. The 1995 Cobra R had a 351 Windsor with GT-40 heads and lower intake with a cobra upper bolted on. This was the last year the 351 was offered in a Mustang. After 1995, the 4.6L took the 5.0L place and was out powered by a 5.4L in the 2000 Cobra R.

Conclusion:

1995 Cobra R

Oliver, ya got me! I was going for the trick question, but '95 it was for the Cobra 'R'. Previous to that it was the '73, not counting the Saleen cars, which I don't consider 'factory'.

02Mach1, I can only guess you're refering to the same '95 Cobra 'R' with the 351 rated at 300 hp.

For today; before the 4.6 S/DOHC V-8, what was the only 'production' OHC V-8 Ford ever offered. (Hint; it was a crate motor, never offered in a production vehicle.)

The 1965, 1966, and 1967 Shelby Mustang Cobra GT-350s were rated at 306 hp, though not sure of the torque numbers--289 V8. The 1995 Cobra R had 300 hp; the 1996, '97, and '98 Cobra had 305 through a similar 4.6L 4v as the Mach 1.

Conclusion:

1995 Cobra R
'65-'67 Shelby GT-350

Both had similar horsepower figures, though the GT-350s were measured without any of the extra equipment bolted on. In modern factory numbers, the engines are measured with all the accessories. So, the 1995 Cobra R is probably the correct answer. It had 365 ft-lbs of torque, though.

falcon, I'm not sure.

the only other OHC motor was the 427 "Cammer" of the late '60's.

'production' motor...several one and two-off ohc windsor Cosworth prototypes were built...I think for formula or indy racing; late '60's

The answer is most definitly the awesome SOHC 427 motor. (Of which Liberty Co. is now making a 1:6 scale reproduction of and it is fantastic.) The DOHC small block had Gurney-Weslake heads and was a race only engine hand built in very small numbers.
