That's funny, I hadn't realized it was already posted. Though you are correct but for some reason I feel like one, very crucial name, is missing. (that I know of) Probably not, but I'll look it up sometime if i ever get a chance. You're good, I definately need to bow to you after reading some of the other posts. My mere 18 year old mind has only been able to soak up so much Mustang Trivia. But I have more. Tomorrow is another day. This is fun!

Keep 'em coming. This thread is open to anyone who wants to put a question out there...it's all for fun!

For today; The late '60's were the infancy of automotive aerodynamics, and nowhere was this more evident than in NASCAR. Dodge and Plymouth answered the call with the Charger 500, then the Charger Daytona and Superbird. What were the two cars that FoMoCo developed and raced (and sold to the public) to dominate the aero-wars?
Non-Ford bonus; Why was the spoiler on the Superbird and Daytona set so high? Super-Bonus; Who was the famous Mopar NASCAR driver that jumped ship to Ford for one season tp run a blue oval aero car?

Just getting into the trivia thing here, so I'll throw out a guess. Ford made the Talledega and a Cyclone to run against them I believe. Dodge made the wing that tall to clear the decklid when it was opened. And wasn't it Richard Petty who jumped ship? Not positive, but I gave it a try. Thanks for the brainwork.

In 1969, Richard Petty broke off from Mopar for a season to race for Ford. He drove Ford's Torino in both "Torino" and "Talladega" forms. The Talladega was basically a longer nosed version of the Torino. The other Ford "Aero" car was the Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II.

The wing on the Mopars were so high because the wing needed to clear the roofline to generate any downforce. Along with downforce, the side supports helped stablize the car at speed. Those are from wind tunnel tests released from the Chrysler Corporation.

How many of each Ford Aero cars were produced?

Welcome to it everyone! This is a great place and this thread has been a blast to share with everybody!

The answers to my questions were; Torino Talledaga and Mecury Cyclone Spoiler II. The wing on the Superbird has to be that high to clear the trunk lid when it was opened. And Richard Petty was the driver that ran Ford for one year before returning to the Mopar nest.

The new questions may take me some time to research..."I'll be back!"

OK...I'm back...hey, stop throwing things!

Rarest '79 Pace Car (other than the Roush prepared actual carsof which there were 3) was the auto/5.0 cars of which 2,106 were built.
The rare '83 GT convertible had a production of 1,001 units.
The last year of the Mach 1 before prodution resulmed in 2003, was the Mustang II Mach 1 of 1978 of which 7,968 were built.

What was going to be Ford's next production "aero" in 1970, had Ford not done what? What engine powered it and how many were made?

The Torino King Cobra would have had a 429 CJ, although it was rumored to have a Boss 429. This was also listed as an option for the production Torino for homologation, but it never happened. Two of the King Cobras were built and those that attended the Ford 100 Event in Dearborn saw one of them.
For today; in addition to the 'King Cobra', there was another aero car that Ford built two of. This other type car was at Ford 100, what was it called unofficially, and what did the car actually say on the fenders?

Although it was unofficially called the "Mercury Cyclone Super Spoiler", this car bore Cyclone Spoiler II fender stripes.

For today;WhenHot Wheels debuted one of the most popular cars was the 'Custom Mustang'. A few years later what would become a more popular H/W Mustang came out, with a chrome version for collector club members. This cars name has been resurrected, although briefly on a new H/W car that officially called '68 Mustang however early versions have this name on the fenders and base. What is this cars 'unofficial' name?

Sorry, I have been busy for the past few days.

Actually, there were 3 of the Torino King Cobras made. Powered by a 429 Super Cobra Jet, this car was never made nor entered into NASCAR because Ford pulled out of racing that year. Yes, one was at Ford 100.

How many convertible and supercharged Shelby Mustangs were made in 1966?

On the topic of 1966 production numbers, how many High Country Special Mustangs were made in 1966? Of those, how many were convertible?

There were 11 1966 Shelbys shipped with the Paxton supercharger, and 4 convertibles were built according to SAAC.
I have no idea about the High Country Specials. Anyone else?

Right on the $, AZ. Only one of these cars came equipped with the GT-350S stripes (6S051) and was the prototype of the supercharged Shelby GT-350(It was also the first Shelby painted any color other than white). This option continued after '66, although with the option of moving up to the 428 equipped GT-500 (429 in '71) few saw any reason to check this on the order sheet.

There were 4 Shelby GT convertibles that years as well as 11 supercharged GT350S's. That year, Hertz, the rental car company, order a heavy number of GT350's. Most of the "Rent-a-Racer" Hertz cars were ordered in black paint, but a few were ordered in red, white, blue, and green. That makes the GT350S's not the first Shelby's to come in any color that white because the Hertz order came in other colors as well.

How many of these Hertz "Rent-A-Racer" Shelby GT-350's were ordered and made? What did this do to Shelby production in 1966?

In regards to the 1966 High Country special edition mustang: 333 of these were made, of that 333, 33 were convertible. The relation there is all 3's; for every10 hardtops there was one convertible.

How many of this special edition package were made in 1967?

The ONLY GT-350S so striped was 6S051, the 51st '66 Shelby. Rick Kopec of SAAC stated that this was the first non-white '66 Shelby built. All other Shelby's w/the Paxton had standard GT-350 stripes, and could be had in a number of other colors as could all '66's. Of the 2,380 Shelby GT-350's built in 1966, 936 were Hertz GT350H's, most of which were black and gold but not all. The earliest Hertz car was 6S450, much later than 6S051.

For today; Why did Shelby American use the black/gold paint scheme on the majority of the GT-350H's? What other years did Hertz offer Shelby's for rent, but without cars carrying the 'H' designation?

(Follow up note. Ford only built 2 King Cobra Torinos, there is a third car that was pieced together by Holman-Moody at the end of '70, but does not carry a Ford Design production code.)

Peyton Cramer, Shelby American General Manager, walked into a meeting with Hertz with a proposed order of 50 GT-350 Mustangs. He walked into that meeting because he found out GM was going to quite their supply of Corvettes to Hertz. After that meeting, Cramer walked out with an order for 1,001 GT-350H Mustangs. Of this 1,001-car order, only 936 GT-350H Mustangs were made; most of these cars were automatic. All the Mustangs were leased to Hertz and eventually ended up back with Shelby and Ford because of this. To rent one of these "Rent-a-Racer" Mustangs you needed a valid driver's license and must be 25+ years of age. This order from Hertz nearly doubled the Shelby production that year.

Ah, now I see what you meant by the first "colored" Shelby. I thought you meant it was the only one that year. Awesome, you're like an encyclopedia.

A new piece of information has just come to light: A friend of mine informed me that there were 6 Shelby Convertibles made in 1966, but only 5 have been accounted for. One of those five cars was destroyed. I'm not sure how accurate his is, but it was new information for me. If that is correct then FLMach 1 was correct.

US produced Shelby Mustangs stopped in 1969, with the leftover cars retagged as 1970's with the addition of dual hood stripes and front spoiler. The last actual Shelby Mustang production was in 1971, the Shelby Mustang Europa. Shelby later commisioned a dozen 'official' convertibles to be built from existing rust free cars located to be stripped down and rebuilt as 'new' in 1979, they were finished by 1983 and sold for $40K at the time and do show up from time to time for sale.
The missing two '66 Shelby convertibles are phantom serial numbers (6S2379/white, and 6S2380/pink). Cars that were planned, but never built. The 'crushed car' theory has been floating around for a number of years but it has been pretty much determined that the white and pink car never happened. I have had the pleasure of seeing the first one (6S2375/green), the others are 2376/pale yellow, 2377/red, and 2378/blue.

If you are interested in one of the most interesting Mustang websites on the planet, go to www.people.freenet.de/pony , you will find information on these cars as well as the '71 Shelby Europas, Bond Mustangs, Trans Am racers, Bosses, and much more!

PS, and if this was a trick question; Shelby stopped producing their cars in L.A. in '67, with Ford picking up production at the A.O. Smith facility in Ionia, Michigan.

And, the production figure for '67 High Country Specials was 400.

Hmmm...trick question, eh...

For today, what style(s) chrome tips did the Boss Mustangs come with. (This question does not pertain to the '69 prototype built by Dearborn Steel Tubing...heck, it even had Mag Stars on it!)

Turn downs - no chrome, or maybe they were chrome just for protection against the elements. That's all I know of.
