Never ran slicks! Help

I am planning on running in the True Street Class at the NMRA Commerce,GA race and MV Performance has a set of weld wheels and slicks they would like me to try for the race.

I have NEVER run on slicks. I have run DR's and sticky street tires but never a slick. I have no idea how to launch on slicks and whether they will require much more concentration on the top end to maintain stability.

I run bolt on mods with a 125 shot. I have 4.30 gears but not a built rear. Aluminum FR driveshaft and aluminum flywheel, stock clutch.

Any advice or help would be great! Im going to test and tune at Commerce this Friday and really dont want to make a fool of myself. Thanks!

Re: Never ran slicks! Help

Heat tires up, dumb clutch at 5-6k, and let er' rip! Slicks are INCREDIBLY easy to race with. Top end wiggle will scare you the first time but DON'T over correct it. People crash when trying to correct the cars wiggle from the constantly changing tires :P. Here is what a 5.5k clutch drop looks likem, literally just dump it and go lol.

FYI, you can't run a slick in NMRA True Street. It's must be a DOT approved tire.

Re: Never ran slicks! Help

If you're still running stock axle shafts and a stock differential (regardless of the gears), you're likely to break something fairly quickly on slicks. You may also want to consider reinforcing your torque boxes so they don't tear.

Go to some of their test-n-tune nights and try them out.

Do a burnout, bring revs up to 6800, dump the clutch at the same time floor the throttle. IMO unless you spray, you will bog launching at 5,000rpms.

I used to launch at 4k when I got the car to get used to it and never once bogged it off the line...

If you dump the clutch at 4,000rpms on slicks the car will bog. I'm not talking fall on it's face bog. I'm talking lay over then pick back up bog. My car did it @ 6,000rpms with 4.56 gears... My tire pressure was @ 11psi cold and that hurt me alot. I think a bolt on Mach's tire pressure should be around 15+.

Re: Never ran slicks! Help

Funny no one asked what size slick. Im assuming 28x10.5. 4.30 with nitrous launch at 5.5-6k with 4.30s. Better to have a little too much and a little spin than to bog and dead hook with stock axles.

+1 on the DOT for true street.

Slicks are far more forgiving for torque boxes and axles that drs.

Re: Never ran slicks! Help

+1 for true street and slicks not approved.

Oh well I appreciate all the feedback, I guess Ill have to go with a set of DR's. I think I am still going to give the slicks a try this Friday just for the hell of it.

I figure ill arm/purge, rev to 5500-6k, wait for last amber light and let it eat.

Wish me luck!

That rear end is living on borrowed time. Trying the slicks out might be the final punch.

a bias ply tire is alot easier on a rear end than a drag radial with a stiff side wall.

Darn. Looks like I built my rear end for nothing. Didn't know you could do redline dumps on the stock rear end and slicks. 1.5 short times all day on stock axles

If your launchign on a tire every drivetrain is on borrowed time. I was simply making the statement that bias ply tires are easier on a car than drag radials.

I raped the spider gears on a cobra diff and twisted an axle tube from a 5500rpm launch with bias ply et streets. That was motor only 280rwhp. It's all in how you use your clutch. I wasn't slipping the clutch any, I was just "side stepping" the clutch off my 2-step.

Re: Never ran slicks! Help

I dont just strait side step mine on my et streets, i very swiftly let off the clutch. My stock junk doesnt have enough pumpkin to pull its self off the line otherwise
