Drag radial wheel/tire combo question

I am getting some MT drag radials in a 275 width and I have stock rims in the 8 inch width but I also have some AFS Mach rims that are 10.5 inches wide. Which ones should I use or should I get a different tire? I know that 9 inch rims are ideal but I can only get one or the other and I think the dr's are the way to go. What do you think?

Re: Drag radial wheel/tire combo question

Are you drag racing or playing on the street? Maybe a 555r in a 315 and you can run them on the 10.5s you've got? That combo works for me and I manage 10k miles out of a pair. For high rpm launching drag racing, my money would be on the mickeys though. Even in a 275 on an 8" wheel. But they only last a few thousand miles.

Re: Drag radial wheel/tire combo question

That is so funny, that is the exact combo im running right now, the 555 with a 315 width. They are pretty good, but with my new torque converter, I spin half way down the track. Maybe I should heat them up a little bit more. The last time I went to the track I was leaving at about 2500 RPMs without any burnout at all. The last run the last time I went to the track I heated them up quite a bit without going through the water box and that helped. The next time I go to the track, I am going to do a much bigger burnout than I did the last time.

Are you using the 555 or the 555r? When I was stock, I could shoot 315 555's off like they were nothing. I can definitely see you overworking them if that's what you're using.

Edit- just noticed the eibach sportlines. I don't think those help much with traction, someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: Drag radial wheel/tire combo question

I am just using the 555. Are the R's that much better? I wouldn't mind using a new tire so I cut down on the rotating mass but if I don't have the right size rim, I may just have to switch to the Rs.

Can't say for sure, because I've never used them. But I'd get the nt05r over the nt05 if getting a grip was the main goal.

Re: Drag radial wheel/tire combo question

NT05R is a nice tire. We run them on my little brothers fox and I have to say Im quite impressed with the way they handle bot street and track. His car makes about 350hp or so. Panhard bar and torque are and he has no problem ripping off 1.7 60fts.

Re: Drag radial wheel/tire combo question

Are these track only wheels or street/strip ?

If street/strip get the 555R's and yes theyre very different, i have 555's up front and 555R out back for street wheels.

If track only its time to look into some Mickey thompson. I have a set of drag wheels with ET Street R's now.

Re: Drag radial wheel/tire combo question

The new tires would be for the track only. I live in Southwest Florida and we are about to start our rainy season and I need more street tread to handle the conditions. Does the 8 inch wheel with some 275 X 17" Mickey's sound like the best way to go?

Mt's for the track? Yes.
Mt's for rain? Please don't do it.

Re: Drag radial wheel/tire combo question

I ran the 555r and that we're really good for the streets warmed up the grip good. Now I have the nt05r and there good to. I haven't had the chance to warm them up good but they grip hard around 3k launches. When really warm I'm launching at like 3500rpm on the street

Re: Drag radial wheel/tire combo question

My nittos were horrendous in the rain and my buddies mickeys even worse, if you cant trailer it to the track its time to reconsider if rain is likely.

That's what I have been hearing. In which case, if I even thought for a second that there would be even the slightest chance for rain, I just wouldn't go that weekend.
