How high can I safely rev the automatic motor?

Redline is 5800, rev limiter is 6250. Can I set my programmer to have it shift at 6200 safely? It seems to pull a lot harder the higher I rev it.

Re: How high can I safely rev the automatic motor?

You can safely rev them as high as the Converter and auto tranny can hold,
It's the trans in the auto cars that limits rpm, not the crank. The torque converters "balloon" over 6000 rpm. Ford, in it's infinite wisdom, put a cast crank in auto cars to save a few $'s. They figured they can't spin that fast anyway why put a forged crank in..
There is also a nifty little c-clip that displaces itself around 6000 rpm on the stock transmission.

Re: How high can I safely rev the automatic motor?

Thanks! So I guess leave it at 5800 or 5900?

Re: How high can I safely rev the automatic motor?

Yes. However One of the best mods you can do is to buy an upgraded transmission and converter from Darrin and you will be AMAZED at how much quicker the car will be. The cost isn't that bad either.

Call Darrin. He is a straight up guy. He had TONS of info and is easy to deal with.

Re: How high can I safely rev the automatic motor?

NA - I found a shift at apx 6100 rpms is right in the sweet spot. Anything higher nets slower ETs.
Spray - I lower the shift points in 5700.
I have my rev limiter raised to 6700.

Shift mine at 6300 and go through the traps at 7000. Rev limiter is set at 7200. I have an aftermarket converter though. Good luck...

Are you guys playing with fire since Darren said 6000ish blows out the stock converter and the c clip?

Re: How high can I safely rev the automatic motor?

an OCCASIIONAL excursion above 6000 isn't gonna hurt it, but beating the snot out of it all the time will cause the trans to possibly grenade.

How much $ is that combo from him? Do I send him my stock stuff as a core? This is my daily driver (10,000 miles a year) so what converter is best?

Re: How high can I safely rev the automatic motor?

the motor can be taken to 7200 without much worry, much more than that and the rod bolts on the stock bottom end will become a concern.......

now the auto i wouldnt push much higher than say 62-6300 without it being built, your playing with fire with the stock c-clip setup.

My car had 10,000 when I bought a Converter from Darrin, When you have the converter installed the front pump slides out and they install spiral clip. My original Ford clip was already popping out when the mechanic installed the spiral. So needless to say.'Its a great idea to install" As a daily driver a converters fine, you will lose alittle gas mileage in town, but on Highway, I still get over 20 easy..

Call Darrin and ask him. I don't like quoting prices for other people's businesses. But you will be suprised at how little it is. Darrin is very knowledgeable and very very easy to do business with. My car was and still is a DD. I put on 10-12K miles per year. I go to the track 1-2 times a month. You will also be suprised at how streetable one of his converters will be. I wish I had gone a little more stall than the 3500 I got.

Re: How high can I safely rev the automatic motor?

What happens when the c-clip displaces itself?
I have heard of this happening, I'm assuming its a centrifugal force thing brought on by high RPM's?
Without any other modifications than the Spiral Clip, what kind of HP can that tranny handle?
