Is a Catback system enough alone?

I want to put on Borla Stingers. Is that enough alone? or do you really need a aftermarket H pipe, and/or headers? (please give me both your opinion on sound and performance)

It that enough for what??? What are you trying to to make power or sound or what? some info would be nice. If you are looking for sound go to youtube or streetfire

Well mostly sound, but power is always great too. I am really wondering if just the catback alone would give me that great musclecar sound, or if you really need the aftermarket H pipe to get the full effect.

Re: Is a Catback system enough alone?

I installed the K&N CAI and Magnaflow Cat-back the same day and noticed an improvement right away. It was a couple of months later I installed my Pypes catted-X pipe and although I have no dyno sheets to back up my feelings I’d say the catted-X really woke up my car. I have a 04 and many have stated because of the double brick secondary cat’s on the 04’s you notice more of a improvement over the 03 with a single brick secondary cat.

Since mine is an 04 too, it sounds like if you can afford it just do both. I've though about doing the CAI too. Maybe I'll just make one big project out of it and do all three. Thanks

Re: Is a Catback system enough alone?

It will sound nice with just the Stinger catback...loud at WOT...but nice and deep at idle...no drone

Now if you want REALLY loud add the off road H pipe! I like both ways...

It's never enough. Once you start modding, it will never be enough

Re: Is a Catback system enough alone?

My exhaust is stock with a Borla Stinger cat back on it and I love the way it sounds!! Nice deep rumble with a great burble on deceleration!

Re: Is a Catback system enough alone?

Go ahead and spend the little extra and do the H or X pipe at the same time and be done with it. You'll be glad you did.

I ran for a few months with just the Borla catback. The sould was pretty good. I had it dyno'd before and after adding a magnaflow catted X. The X gave me +20rwhp and made the car much louder. Next is longtubes but that will be after I wear this clutch out and when I find a good tuner around here.

Re: Is a Catback system enough alone?

I ran the stingers for about 8 months and loved the sound as it was. When I got my longtubes installed I went with a new H pipe. And there is quite a bit difference now. I enjoyed the first setup, but now it is just perfect.

It also depends on if you are planning any other mods down the line. Consider your future plans for the car, that way you prevent buying parts multiple times.

Cool Re: Is a Catback system enough alone?

I ran Stingers stock for awhile then added a used Bassani catted x pipe. When you add the mid pipe you will feel the added power and the sound is awesome. My cats finally died so I replaced my X pipe with a catted Pypes x and I am happy with it also. I went with the cheaper pipe since I plan on headers and will be using another mid pipe with the headers. The only problem with the Mach 1 is the more you mod the harder it is to stop. Each mod I have added has just added to my enjoyment of the car.

Re: Is a Catback system enough alone?

Enough is a relative term...you will traditionally pick up between 5-10 rwhp with a good low-restriction cat-back. Mostly they are for sound and will help once modifications reach a certain point. I recommend starting there and then working to more if you need more

Re: Is a Catback system enough alone?

Headers give more power than any other part of the exhaust.

H pipes give more power than catbacks, but plan ahead. I added an off road h pipe and then when I went long tubes I had to change to an h pipe that matched. So do some searching on power gains and decide if you would be willing to spend around $1000 for just long tubes and install(cheap brand).

For the budget minded, off road h-pipe with weld in mufflers in stock catback and most of the time that satisfies you till you get the itch to mod again.

I bought all of my stuff used and saved a bunch. Don't be afraid to check out used exhaust.
