*Need Help* "Blue smoke on Start-up"

I just purchased a zinc yellow 2003 Mach with 4200mi. If it sits for a while or in the morning when I start it up, I notice blue smoke from the tail pipes. This is my first Mustang with a mod motor, but I really don't think this is normal. The motor sounds and runs great. It has no bolt ons, not even a K&N. I did notice oil in the tube from the valve cover to the oulet tube. Not sure if it's sucking oil in the intake. Anyone experience this? Appreciate any help...Rob

PS Hope I posted this in the right area.

Re: *Need Help* "Blue smoke on Start-up"

Dear Zinc Yellow Mach1 owner I have owned a couple of late model mustangs with the 4.6 liter motor. I have found both to blow a little blue smoke when starting up after sitting for a while. I have not had problems with either car. I would probably not worry about it unless you are using a lot of oil (>1 qt every 3000 miles).
Good Luck

I see "I just searched for "blue smoke" anyway...did I post this in the wrong place? I also see "Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms." Just curious, I'm new to the site and want to do the right thing. Thanks,

Re: *Need Help* "Blue smoke on Start-up"

when is the last time you changed the oil and how much did you put in? I have found that if I put in 6 quarts like Ford recommends, it smokes, so its 5.25 quarts for mine...

Re: *Need Help* "Blue smoke on Start-up"

mustangmike - I saw the blue smoke both out the mirror in park and when I got outside. I have only seen it happen once since I changed the oil. I did take the PCV and "blew" it out. Not sure if that helped or not.

Zammit - Thanks for the link. My motor don't make any noise and as of yesterday, I haven't seen any blue smoke, see message above. Did you get your Mach squared away? I appreciate both of your replies. Rob

Re: *Need Help* "Blue smoke on Start-up"

A little smoke after sitting for awhile isn't a problem... its just a little residual oil in the combustion chamber...

When Ford say 6 quarts, that means 6 quarts. Some (maybe all) of the dipsticks are marked incorrectly. You would MUCH rather be 1/2 quart low, than a 1/2 overfilled.

Re: *Need Help* "Blue smoke on Start-up"

My engine has no noise.....but I find if I start the car and move it in the drive way to get access to the garage then let it sit for 1/2 a day.....I get blue smoke on startup. Try starting it cold run it for 60 seconds shut it down then start it up later in the day. I'm betting more than a few Mach's will huff oil.

Re: *Need Help* "Blue smoke on Start-up"

These mods around here will move a thread (in the tsb room) only to leave one about smoke on startup.

Anyway here is an earlier discussion on this.
http://www.mach1registry.org/forums/...ad.php?t=30093

And like I said there, this is not oil smoke. Its fuel.
Next time it does it get out of the car and walk thru the smoke and take a big snort.
Raw gas smell.
Also oil smoke is much whiter in color.

Dont worry about it. This has been discussed ever since the first guys received their Mach's.

Re: *Need Help* "Blue smoke on Start-up"

Everyone, thanks for the replys. NC Mach 1, I will go back and take a good snort. It for sure is "Blue" smoke. Unless it's a mod motor thing....I've never heard of oil smoke being white in color. Just the same, I will go back and sniff it. I was reading the thread that you sent, one guy saying that Ford replace the "valve guide seals." Hope it don't come to that...

Blue smoke = oil
White smoke = water/antifreeze
Black smoke = fuel
Red smoke = bird sucked through intake
