Trak Lock clutch paks

Does anyone have a good write up for procedures on changing the clutch paks in trak loc rear end? I already have the Cobra carbon disc clutches. I just want to make sure I can do it.

Re: Trak Lock clutch paks

Very straight forward swap, actually rebuilt one last night in maybe 20 mins?

Only tricky part is the new s-spring, needle nose vice grips & a rubber mallet make very short work of it.

Re: Trak Lock clutch paks

My friend put carbon fiber clutch packs into his 8.8 in his truck. It's not bad to do as long as you know how to pull the shafts and get everything out. It was really just a remove/disassemble/reassemble. The only tough part was the S spring, a little internet search showed a trick where you put a hose clamp on the spring to compress it then install and cut clamp off. Also soak the clutches for a day before installation.

Re: Trak Lock clutch paks

I normally do not soak the clutches in oil before installing them, this way you can add in one additional clutch. The S spring is the only hard part but as already stated needle nose pliers and a mallet or a Ss band clamp will work just fine. I have also installed an S spring from the 2005 F150 which works great if you dont want to add the extra clutch.

Remember the friction modifier when your done

carbon clutches need to be soaked in Friction Modifier before install.

Re: Trak Lock clutch paks

any advice on how to not drop the shims when removing the diff from the housing? I don't want to mix them up from side to side.

Still doesn't last very long... Does the carbon rebuild kit have enough disks to pack it extra tight?

my car is an '04 bought new. I have reshimmed my clutch packs many times and they are not the same part number as the carbon clutch kit for the 03-04 Cobra. I can't use the carbon clutches and run F Stock in SCCA autox. Only the original clutch material disks are allowed.

I've also posted some tips on the reshim job so do a search. On the Corral website, MFE posted a detailed step by step post on the older 8.8. most still applies to the '99-'04 8.8.

I can't remember what I set the axle end play at but you may find that info in the search also. Tight clutch packs are your friend.

this is sort of true, friction modifier only is there for longevity. The clutches actually work better without it, but they will wear faster and there is a slight chance that they will chatter.....BTW im pretty sure any gear oil labeled "LS" has modifier in it already...ie mobil 1 80-90. and getting another disc in there is great i did that on my last 8.8 was awesome.

I dont know about the part numbers on a Cobra but the clutch paks are still carbon on the Machs.
