WTF paint codes !!!!

Fixing my oopsie at the track and having issues getting the correct paint grrrr.

They mixed me 1 qt get all ready to spray and do a test card just incase LUCKILY i did. According to ppg and martin senour z1 is the same as yz ( no way in hell!!! )

Our cars bright white
Yz kinda a cream off white

Luckily napa is willing to work with me to try and get the correct color.
I tried pro/base again (my truck the color match couldnt have been closer) and no luck

Maybe tec/base or maybe they can get a closer pro just not by code

I was told www.paintscratch.com is a good place to buy paint in various setups, like touch up bottles and rattle cans. I've been told they do a great job of mixing and matching, but I can't confirm that.

Re: WTF paint codes !!!!

Spent a hour at napa with the paint guy ....the poor guy mixed up a half dozen different ford whites and NONE match our cars.......we think we figured it out that its just not enough white pigment BUT it darkens up ALOT when drying so he gave me a can of just white pigment and have to mix my own and try, mix and try ect.

Re: WTF paint codes !!!!

You might ask SW for a discount; I get one as a returning customer for painting around the house.

Re: WTF paint codes !!!!

Ok so dupont looks alot closer in the can now waiting to spray. They looked it up by vin code and shows oxford white. But looking online it looks more like crystal white from the pre 1999 cars

Re: WTF paint codes !!!!

I am in wv back in buffalo ny i could have gotten it mixed but sadly we moved. Most body shops want the whole job and at $4000 estimate was nuts.

3 paint shops gave it a whirl and no luck (sherwin williams, martin senior, and ppg) luckily dupont had another varient that was much closer (totaly diff mix)

Test shot the side scoop looked great, So going to shoot the front facia second. Then onto the blending into factory paint

Re: WTF paint codes !!!!

YZ and Z1 are the same color. They used the Z1 code on Super Duty trucks. The F-150's and cars used the YZ code. Believe me, I know the color all too well.
Next time give R-M or Glasurit a shot. Both BASF products, and Glasurit is considered the premier paint. Many of the top car builders (Foose, Trepanier, etc.) use Glasurit exclusively.

Re: WTF paint codes !!!!

I would have loved to try basf BUT it was almost a 2 hour ride. Every shop that mixed up the z1 paint code turned out very creamy and not bright white...... and that matched the color chip cards so its not like they mixed it wrong.

Re: WTF paint codes !!!!

On the Z1 / YZ , we always just use single stage because it's a better match.
The single stage can be reduced out, and sprayed similar to as if it was b/c, then let it flash 15-20 minutes and clear it.
Depending on the vehicle, sometimes we just panel paint with single stage, and other times we blend it and clear it.
We have also used what's called "factory pack" PPG Deltron DBC basecoat for that color. Factory Pack means the paint manufacturer actually mixes a particular color in a large batch and sells it usually in a pint or quart. It can many times be a better match than what you get mixed off the stir bank at a jobber. As far as I know, only PPG and DuPont (now Axalta) sell factory pack color. R-M used to, but I believe they quit.
