How true! Hope this doesn't hurt the chance to see a pony pace the great race next year. This year is a stupid (GM) truck! Vipers paced the race in '92 and '96 and Dodge has never had a motor there, so maybe it won't be a factor.

For today: Tasca Ford built a famous Mustang called the KR (or KR-8) in '67. Why is this car important to performance Mustang history. Bonus; They also built another car for the strip that was so fast there they put up a reward for anyone that could beat it, what was that car called?

The KR was the predecessor to the 428 CJ Mustang. Tasca built it with a mix of off the shelf 427 and 428 part, mixed together to make something very similar to what would become the 428 CJ that we know today. Tested by the car magazines of the time there was even a mail in form to send into Ford so that they would build somthing faster than the 390 car that was the fastest Mustang at the time, but not nearly as fast as the Camaro of the day. Tasca Ford also built the "Tasca Super Boss", which was one of the fastest cars ever built at the time, a beautiful machine that has been found and I believe is either restored or is in the process of being restored.

Just flipping through Mustang Monthly and they had a whole big thing on the 428 CJ and 428 SCJ. They also had a little blurb about one of the Lawman Mustangs. I believe it was one of the '70s and it just sold at auction for something like $129,000.
Man that is alot of money

Car and Driver had something on the Lawman a few years ago, but only on the news stand edition, subscribers like me got rammed with no clue as to what we were missing!

Sorry about the absence today, but here's the next query, and it's a doozy! (Do you know where that saying came from?)
In the late '60's and early '70's Ford tried some 'interesting' experiments on Mustang drivelines including a 4WD Mustang built by Ferguson in the U.K.(Four were built, one survived today), but in house they built the Boss 429 L.I.D. What was unique about that car?

The LID Mustang was a mid-engine Boss 429, first as a '69 and then rebodied as a '70. The motor was basically where the back seat would normally be and the drive system was pretty much what we would know as a front wheel drive trans-axle, only in the rear (see Pantera). The idea was that it would be a compact package for very efficient performance package that could be produced economically...it didn't fly...

Speaking of flying, lets try a Ford question next; Name two airplanes that have been built by the Ford Motor Company.

For today: By my estimation the Mustang has had the most different rim diameters available from the factory of any car in production since its' inception. Not including any tuner modified cars, how many size rims (diameter, not width) have been offered on the Mustang and what sizes were they?

For those who care...Mustangs have come form the factory with 13, 14, 15, TRX(390mm), 16, 17, and 18 sized wheels and tires from the factory for a total of 7.

Today; What would be special about your first generation Mustang if were equipped with a "Dagenham"?

Dagenham transmissions were a 4 speed option on early 6 cylinder Mustangs. Must 6 cyl. cars had 3 speed manuals or automatics. 4 speed, inline 6 cylinder Mustangs wouldn't be seen again until the Fox body cars switched over to inline 6's from the V-6's that carried over from the Mustang II.

Next; In the Bond movie "Diamonds are Forever", Bond drove a '71 Mach 1. What 'magic' event happened with that car that was really nothing more than a continuity mistake by the film makers?

A girl disappeared and then reappeared and her clothes flickered on and off.

Just kidding, never saw it. Just had to toss that out here.

Hey, at least you were paying attention! In the movie, there is a scene where Bond is driving the Mach 1 and to go down an alleyway he gets the car up on two wheels. In the next shot, the car is exiting the alleyway but is on the other two wheels! Ooops! One of the great cinematic flubs in history, and there was a Mustang involved. This car has been found and is in the hands of an enthusiast.( Another famous one was in the movie Bullitt...the Charger lost 5 hubcaps during the car chase!)

Qustion for today; What did the Shelby Mustang have to do with the phrase "$17 a day, and .17/c a mile"? What company did this apply to?

Hert`z Rental Car Company. The car was the GT-350H. A special run of 1001 cars, mostly in black with gold paint schemes but later were offered in all 1966 Shelby colors.

Hey falcongtho3 - speaking of Bond movies. . . .
Tell me how that little six cylinder Mustang in Goldfinger could outrun James' Aston Martin?
Keep up the trivia

NOS, of course! Actually the DB5 has an inline 6 cyl also, about 4 litres...so it's not that far fetched, if you don't take into account the finer suspension. Don't forget that the Aston was weighed down with all the goodies from 'Q'. I'm more interested in how the DB5 in the Brosnan Bond flick, 'Goldeneye' kept up with the Ferrari 355 that Famke Janssen was ploting...now that's a mismatch!
As far as the trivia...winner! The $17/day and .17c/mile was the amount it cost to rent a '66 GT-350H (for Hertz) Shelby Mustang. Just over 1,000 were ordered, most were black/gold, with regular colors filtering in later on. Also known as the Hertz Rent-A-Racer, the stories are legendary. The Shelby/Hertz connection did not stop in '66 as Shelby's were available to rent into the '69 model year, although these cars did not carry any special designation.

Now...next question! For those who do not know, our beloved Mustang was almost put out to pasture on the mid-80's, at least as we know it. Ford had every intention to change the Mustang to a very different type of car, until the Mustang faithful sent loads of letters to Ford that put the pony back on track in the way we know of it today. What car did Ford finally produce that was in fact to be the Mustang, even to the point of the first few of these cars having 'Mustang' embossed on the rear bumper covers?

Ford turned to their longtime Japanese partner Mazda. Mazda was then planning the next version of its front-drive 626 coupe. Dearborn thought they could save money and jointed in. The result was to be two cars, each with its own styling and dealer network but sharing almost everything else. Ford would get a new Mustang and share the development cost.

Once the word leaked out about the arrangement Mustang loyalist wrote some pretty nasty letters to Ford. They got the message and gave the front driver another name (Probe) and the rest is, as they say, history.

Excellent, and well put, sir!

For today; The very first production Mustang was what color? What happened to it that wasn't supposed to happen? And what was the result of the tracking down of the Canadian pilot who was involved with this situation?

The car was white [wimbleton] and I believe it was accidentally sold to a Canadian airline pilot who saw it in a showroom. They tried to get it back from him but he would not give it back. I think it eventually got back to the Ford Museum this past year or so or am I way off with that?

Right on the color, and on the Canadian airline pilot who bought the car that wasn't supposed to be for sale. Ford tracked him down soon after and got it back, but not before giving him Mustang #1,000,001 ! The first Mustang has been on display and will be at the Ford Centennial celebration. It is supposed to have been 'freshened up' but up until now has not been restored. I hope they have pretty much left it alone, I'd rather it been displayed as it should be.

For today; In '69 (anybody picking up on this being my favorite year Mustang?) there was an option called "Mustang E". What was unique about this one year only car?

Trivia bonus: Not a question, just facts...the '70 Boss 302 use for promotional photos (mostly B&W, thank goodness) was in fact green with red interior!

I do believe this to have been a "first stab" at an economy Mustang. It had a six cylinder. It was to be an answer to the economy imports of the time. If memory serves correctly it was pretty plain jane.
