Check your spare tire!

Hi all. As some of you know, I work in the retail tire business. I try to stay on top of my own tire situation, all the while helping those who come in daily wiht the same. One thing I've always preached is, especially if you're going on a trip of any length, checking your spare tire, if you have one. My Boss 302 does not, and I plan on fixing that soon, as their is an aftermarket fix. I try to remember to check the air in my spare on the Mach 1. I know it's only what we refer to as a donut spare, or a temporary spare, but if I need it at least it's there.
Or was.
I was inspecting both cars more thoroughly after last weeks rain and flood in which both of my cars took water into the interiors, wetting the carpets, and that was it. So I thought. Closer inspection on the Boss found water in the spare well, which has never housed a spare. On the Mach 1 I had checked the quarter panel drop downs on the inside of the trunk as there are vent tubes, and it was still bone dry. An inspection of the spare well revealed...a blown up spare tire! Like really blown up, rubber separated from the belt package. Beyond unuseable. What a kick in the nuts!?!
So, in conclusion...check your spare tires. For proper air pressure. For condition. Because, you never know...

Re: Check your spare tire!

The only one I'm aware of is Tire Rack online. In all my years of doing this, I've never worked for a retailer that's had or had access to them. That's the route I plan on using for a replacement.

Re: Check your spare tire!

I was just thinking the other day mine is so old I should probably just junk it. If I end up with a flat I'll use the tow service under my insurance

Re: Check your spare tire!

A direct replacement Goodyear is $300 (!) from TR, while a Continental (which i a radial, unlike the Goodyear) is $125. I'm pretty sure I'm not worried at this point about the brand. Just want to have a spare at this point.

Re: Check your spare tire!

I have one in the 2019. Jeff at wheel replicas sells the correct spare for the big brake cars like your boss and my PP1 car. Buddy of mine got it for his 2012 boss...I have to run it slightly deflated to for the spare tire hole, but I keep an inflator in the car so...
