GEARED MACH'S- can you beat an STi???

I'm wondering if a set of 4:10's along with some nice sticky tires (street legal tires not D/R's) and basic bolt ons would be enough to not be playing catch when matched up against a good driver in a lightly modded STi.... do the gears make that much of a diff. off the line????

reason for asking, i'm going to be buying another Mach, and before i bring it home i want it geared (4:10's), intake, catless X-pipe, cat-back, set of nice BFG's, and an alum. driveshaft. I want to make sure i will be able to beat my buddies 12.9 STi from day 1.

Re: GEARED MACH'S- can you beat an STi???

Yes they do. Driver matched, the mach should win with the gears and bolt ons compared to their FI bolt ons. Depending on driver and bolt ons, you might not need the gears/tires.

STi's can pull 1.6-1.8 60 ft. in stock form!!!! I havent seen too many Mach 1's pull that w/o D/R's.....

Re: GEARED MACH'S- can you beat an STi???

60FT times are only good if the car has a nice upper end. The mach has a slower launch yes, but the MPH is higher and the times are usually a few tenths better......going off of averages I have seen.

What's wrong with playing catch up? I love cruising by another car half way down the track and knowing there's nothing the other driver can do but just watch the victory slip away.

That was my point. 60 ft times aren't everything. You can play catch up and beat them even with .2 better 60s.

i'm sure there is more satisfaction in leaving an awd car straight up off the line then passing him midway down the track...

yes, yes and yes. Check my sig, I have 4.10s and a few bolt ons and I have yet to see an STI touch that. yeah they get out of the hole great but they arnt often going to trap very high. its the modded evos you gotta watch out for.

I deifinielty think the STI is very fast and i dont wanna sound like a stuck up mach owner on a mach board but we went from a 20 roll and i walk him. People act like they are an american muscle killer.

Re: GEARED MACH'S- can you beat an STi???

STI's are very respectable performers, but I have yet to be beaten by one on the street or at the local drag strip, even when I had the stock 3.55 gears. The big difference that I've noticed having 4.30 gears now is that on the street the car feels much stronger in 1st through 4th gears, but traction is more of an issue in 1st and 2nd. I've solved much of the street traction problem by installing 17 x 9 inch wheels with wider 275/40/17's. At the drag strip, I run BFG drag radials, so traction is not a problem there.

While the STI's may launch a bit better, they really don't run as hard down the track. I typically pass them in late 2nd or early 3rd gear and never look back. And on the top end (freeway, for example), the Mach 1 will walk an STI pretty hard. Stock STI's run 0-100 mph in about 13 to 13.5 seconds. My Mach 1 does it in 11.7 seconds - quite a lot quicker!!! Keep in mind that at 100 mph, you're moving about 150 feet per second, so at 100 mph, I'm ahead of an STI by roughly 200 feet - a pretty good kill in anyone's book.

yeah, way to tell it how it is. I wish we had more info like that when comparing cars around here, maybe we could put more arguments to rest

The 04 GTO is likely to lose to a stock Mach1. My experience with the 05 Goat M6 was near equality with the Mach1 stock vs stock. My car is lightly mod'd and still no gear, I have confronted 2 different 05 M6 GTO's with the same result. They are not as fast, one is silver and may have a weak driver, the red one is faster and both have exhaust mods (and probably more).

I agree that a f/s Mach1 will never "own" an 05 GTO that is silly. The f/s 05 GTO is not going to "own" a Mach1 either. The numbers are very close. The red GTO mentioned above was owned by my sons 02 GT (very modified) but we have been here before; money can make a dog sled fast.

You're not talking about the GTO in the pic below are ya.

Re: GEARED MACH'S- can you beat an STi???

the STi will most likely get the launch on you but don't let that discourage you, just focus on not spinning out and nail the pedal! You'll reel him in so fast he won't know what hit him! I've raced a few STi's and WRX's. My cousin has a modded WRX and he launches on me at 4k and gets me right off the line but I always reel him in almost immediately.

Re: GEARED MACH'S- can you beat an STi???

I have posted about going up against STi's a few time now. I have run more than a couple of em so far, they are an awesome car. But the DSG MACH 1 is SUPREME DARK OVERLORD status so...

Down low, 1st n 2nd gears its a race, after that the MACH runs the hell away. From mid 3rd gear clear to 4th empty, the MACH hurts the STi. EVEN if the Sti gets a better hole shot and grabs some ground on you, you WILL make it up. By mid 3rd your walking on em. 4th there car lengths between u. Running room is the ticket against the STi, freeway runs offer room to breath the MACH and use its long legs and high rpm. I don't know about the rest of you but my stang runs so freaking hard at 120+ .

Yep, in the high mph that V8 really pays off Something 4bangers have issues with. Except maybe in crotch rockets, but even then.....You have dodge that puts the freakin viper V10 in a bike and can theoretically go over 300+ mph(which is easily believable) But going 300+ mph on a bike....can you imagine? If you even twitch your molecules will become one with the asphault....and the air........and everything else within a ten mile radius....IMO
