The bubble will burst!

I was watching a video of a young man who just ordered a new 2020 Shelby GT 500. After adding some ridiculously priced options it came to 106,000 and change. This was Ford's price not with dealer markup, 10,000 just for painted stripes..insane! If financed for 72 months the payment was over 1700 a month. Now I know there are a lot of cars priced more than that, but in the end this is still a Mustang. Gt's optioned in the 50 grand range, this is no longer even remotely a working persons car. Your thoughts.

Re: The bubble will burst!

Yeah, I think Ford got the GT supercar and the GT 500 confused.

Re: The bubble will burst!

I cant argue.

I paid @ 6k more for the GT I just bought than I paid for the Mach back in 2003.

I did not pay a ADM on the Mach by the way.

My Gt is however, the Base car. which is still nicely equipped but no frills. cloth seats. etc.

Same car optioned as a Premium would have run me another 5-6 k. and you are right, 50k is nothing for a loaded GT.

I think Ford has made it pretty clear, that you are going to pay for the Technology, the Shelby Name...or Bullitt, or even if they get around to another Mach 1.

You will have to stay with ecoboost cars or go with more basic GT's like mine to keep the car in the regular person zone.

Re: The bubble will burst!

Somehow I don't think that the price of the Gt500 is justified considering that I paid $58k for my GT350. An additional 50k for the 500? I don't think so.

Re: The bubble will burst!

The only logical result when Ford said they wanted the Mustang to beat a BMW was a price equal to a BMW which means the Mustang is no longer what it has been it's whole existence, "The best bang for the buck".

Yeah...it's ridiculous. Totally kills any interest in that car. I can't even relate to it. I'll see 'em on the street and glance at it....say cool and move on. Meh.

Not exactly a fair comparison imho. The base GT500 is 75 and still very well equipped. The $10k for painted striped is bat ****, out of this world crazy. The DCT in the GT500 carries an MSRP of 25k. Your GT350 + the DCT is already 83k, call it 80k for the core credit of the stock GT350 trans. Obviously Ford isn't paying 25k each but you get the idea.

That was the comparison made from the previous GT500 as well, take the msrp and account for a 25k transmission and you'd expect it to be in the 80s starting price. We're not even talking about the new blower, better intercooler, biggest brakes every and all the other aero and cooling.

To me the GT500 is kind of like the Corvette, the base model is a nice car that will go like hell and if you want to run up the price to stupid levels with options, you can. I don't see why everyone is so hung up on the fully optioned vehicle price. You can run a Raptor up to almost 75k but I don't see people running around talking about it like it only comes in a 75k version.

Re: The bubble will burst!

95% of the people that buy a 2020 GT500 or a C8 Corvette will go with the base model. There is certain specs, materials, etc that you expect on vehicles that cost $50k plus, and both of these models will require at least a few added options to satisfy that requirement. I mean, at the very least, you need the **** stripe option just to get the GT500 look! LOL, there's $10k over base.

The C8 will by far outsell the GT500, because even with the various options the price will be similar to what the average car ended up selling for in the past.

I feel like the only people that will buy this new GT500 will be social media hounds so they can keep their status quo online LOL.

For me, the GT350 was the peak of the Mustang in respect to its roots. It may be really expensive, but the engineering within is awesome. It's just out of my pay grade to ever own one. When it came out, I couldn't believe how much better it was than the Boss 302, which I thought was the greatest Mustang Ford ever made. This new GT500 is just a fluffy social media Mustang supercar that I really don't care for.

my mom's 19 5.0 is the base 10spd. no complaints. if i was buying a new one, the base car is what i would get. too much tech is unappealing to me.

they've lost themselves in the supercar race and they've lost me along the way. a gt500 is not what i would want to use to get around a corner anyway.

Re: The bubble will burst!

i know...smh.

if they're going to put a wing like that on a mustang, they'd better call it a f'n cobra R, give it a high-winding n/a v8 with a stick and limit production to just a few hundred cars. that would help justify the price tag and make better sense for what they're apparently aiming at with this car.

Trucks are way out of line too! I think what I am trying to convey is that the Mustang is not a blue collar bang for the buck car anymore. When you can add two options and increase a car by 30000, it is not even close to affordable. The only way people are able to buy most new cars is 72 or 84 month loans. And last I read there are 2.5 million cars loans 30 days past due just in the US.

I get it to some degree and it's a multi-point problem

1) Government safety and fuel economy requirements keep going up which are expensive to engineer and also responsible for rising curb weights.

2) they put all these options out there because people are willing to pay for them and banks are willing to finance it (even when they shouldn't be

It's crazy what they go for but it's like you dont have the option to buy a smartphone for say $300 instead. It ties back into the vehicle options issue - people dont understand "needs" vs "wants" anymore and have no self restraint.

As far as the track pack for the GT500 being so expensive - it's definitely a showoff thing IMHO. At the same time I think it's important for the future as they continue to develop things like CF parts that will eventually lead to them being much more affordable in the future. It's a halo car to show what's possible. A base 5.0 GT with either manual or 10spd is a hell of a performance car for the price.

...wings, halo car, limited production and what not...

If Ford would have maintained it's similar performance feature set (sort of all around performance), but with 850hp, one or two options, and limited production (and only sold one year)...then maybe the price leaves a better taste in your mouth lol. Then maybe the "halo" features can trickle down into the standard and premium Mustangs over the following years. That might be kinda cool.

Current pricing reflects volume production pricing, can't imagine the price tag if they were only gonna make a couple hundred. My guess is they will be sitting on dealer lots this time next year with nice discounts. Seeing quite a few GT350s sitting on lots around here.

the GT350 is also in what, 3rd model year going on 4? With just 2 years of production on the GT500 I think the only ones sitting on lots for long are the ones that refuse to drop the huge ADM. I think year 1 they're gonna move fast (outside of huge ADM dealers), year 2 they might sit a bit longer but won't be getting discounted.

Starting to see discounts on Bullitt Mustangs, one dealer close to me had 4 and another had three. They can't move those, because they cost to much and the market has been played out... 3rd time they have made a variation.

Re: The bubble will burst!

Sorry the GT500 is an impressive car but in that price range they can keep it. Maybe in a few years when the market calms down like it did with the GT350ís we will look into one. I know the big killer for us is the fact there is no manual option. We drove a new 19 GT with the 10 speed auto and it was impressive, but it just wasnít anywhere near as much fun to drive.

Re: The bubble will burst!

A friend bought a new 350R and says itís the best car he has ever driven. Performance and handling/braking.
So thatís an option for much less.

Me....
I still think a lightly used 03/04 Mach1 is a great car for the money.
