how to get a title

Ok so I bought a new project car i have always wanted and I know its not a ford, but would like help anyway. I bought a 57 chevy belair 2 door post, from a 76 year old man, who bought it from an old woman whose deceased husband owned it. She is now deceased as well and the car hasent been registered since 1978 and no one has a title for it. How would I go about aquiring one at this point? I want to get this cleared up before I spend any money restoring it. thanks

Re: how to get a title

you should be able to file with your state office for a lost title or a rebuilt/salvage title. call your local state title agency

Re: how to get a title

At least you're not in New York, where paperwork can become a nightmare. Good luck.

Re: how to get a title

file for storage fees the dmv will send out a notice to the previous owner make sure that you figure 25.00 a day for what ever amount that you want because if the owner steps up you must know what to tell them. so figure 1 year of storage fees at 25.00 a day that means that if anyone wants that car they must pay you 10k to get it if they do not respond to the DMV notice the dmv will issue a certificate that you will need to get a title then just go to DMV and pay for your title at that point and it is yours i do these all the time

first step is getting abandoned paper work from your DMV then fill it out and send it in

Re: how to get a title

Some states you can apply for a lost title, but the owner woudl have to do that, IF it had a title back then. in NY (before 1963?, it probably just had a transferrable registration, sometimes just in the glove box, etc....)

Yes, NY is a PITA when it comes to registering cars, our local office ALWAYS harrases you if you don't cross you T's and dot you I's....
