Talking It lives!

well after whats been a long ordeal with the car losing oil pressure, getting a new motor built, completely changing my gauges around, coolant crossover delete, new stereo and other stuff I finally fired it up tonight!

used my handy ~$25 garden sprayer engine oil priming setup (thanks birdman!)

quick crappy phone video from inside the car

another crappy vid outside the car

idle is still high, hadnt settled in yet. I only brought it up to around 180-190 degrees and called it a night. I'll get it up to full temp tomorrow and hopefully all the crossover delete stuff doesnt come back to bite me in the ***.

D1 with a 3.5" pulley

it hit almost 100psi oil pressure on startup immediately (1600rpm or so, it dropped down from there), the garden sprayer definitely works (pump was primed at the shop through the pickup tube).

I think I have an exhaust leak though, theres a tick/rattle under the car. It didnt make the noise when I spun the motor over with the plugs out, doesnt change pushing the clutch in or out. Damned well better not be the headers @ the heads

Re: It lives!

The ticking sound from under the car must have been the mid pipe, I snugged it up real good and don't hear it anymore

Car idled for a while in the garage, it's 80 outside and it took a looong time to hit 197 so happy with that

Only issue at the moment is that it can't find its idle, it's hunting anywhere in the 800-1200 range. Gonna double check all the coil packs and connectors to make sure they're seated, seems like it might be a real slight misfire but hard to tell

Re: It lives!

Alright...congrats man. I have a leak right where header connects to x pipe..man it sure can be a loud tick-tick. Real happy for you DSG
On my start up had a slight miss..wind up being #7 fuel injector had some trash, out of nowhere, fixed itself. I tried tightening mine and didn't help, may have to loosen then try again.

Re: It lives!

i was pretty happy when I went under there and realized those midpipe to collector bolts werent all that tight.

now to figure out the idle issue, I hate that these coil packs dont like snap onto the plug...hopefully its just a coild pack not quite on all the way but with everything done to the car and it not holding a steady idle it makes a slight misfire very hard to detect.

also need to hook up the widebands to my firewire cable so I can log them for the tuner.

I dont wanna screw around with the car up in the air too long, need to get out on the road and seat the rings

Re: It lives!

Congrats! I know that's a great feeling. Go for a drive and hopefully it will learn idle pretty quickly.

Re: It lives!

it had enough time to learn its idle, something is off

either I didnt get a coil pack back on all the way or the maf is out of position enough relative to where it was before thats is causing a slight issue (the joys of adding a slot style to the procharger setup, the maf tube is in place with 2 rubber elbows which allows movement front to back and to be twisted around...).

Im going to double check all the coil packs and connectors are fully seated and then Ill data log it. I need to figure something out with welding the maf tube in place somehow or someway to subtly mark everything to be sure I can line everything back up.

I should have the 30 mile break in process done this weekend so I can do the first oil change. Then itll be time to recharge the AC, its getting hot down here

Re: It lives!

If it was a coil it should have thrown a missfire code for whichever cylinder it is.

I had a bad coil that wouldn't throw a misfire code.

it has to misfire a certain number of times in a certain number of rpms, I didnt get the connector fully seated on a coil once and the idle was off...idled like that for a decent bit and never threw a code.

Re: It lives!

Friend of mine has a procharged GT, I know he had some slight running issues for a while and he ended up moving the MAF just a few inches one way or the other in the piping and it made a big difference... Good luck with it

Re: It lives!

I thought once you went slot you ended the clocking BS ?? I had the HPX in the pipe with rubber coupler on both side right there where MAF connector was an no issues..you will figure it out, you always do

Re: It lives!

clocking and maf position still matter, even with a slot style. Before it was tuned last time it idled ok but we still ended up rotating the maf from 9 to like 1 and it cleaned up the signal quite a bit.

If it is the MAF position the nice thing is I should be able to put my laptop where I can see it, loosen the clamps and move the MAF around until the counts level out then clamp it back down.

Re: It lives!

well, didnt get to do what I hoped this weekend.

I checked that all the coils were seated, connectors fully seated along with the injectors. I double checked real quick for any missing vacuum lines and such (I dont think there are any vacuum or fuel issue, forgot to check the aeroforce though...and A/F looks good on both banks).

Went to hook my X4 with the laptop to log fuel trims and maf counts only to have it not cooperate...X4 downloaded like 750 files so that took a LONG time. The car is all back together now, bumper, head lights, wheels etc...kinda strange after this long lol.

I think Ill have time to mess around with the MAF tonight after work.

Re: It lives!

me too man, pretty satisfying.

Hope I can get the MAF straight so I can do the 30 mile break in...hopefully no major gremlins appear. I know Im going to have to have my over the axle exhaust pipes re-done to clear the brace on the rear end and still need to swap out the valves on the AC ports and recharge it.

Re: It lives!

well, the sorry ****er is finally running!

put in a new MAF tube (Id bent the ends on the other one being over zealous with the Tbolt clamps) and even put in a honeycomb air straightner screen, still acted like **** even with the cleaned up MAF signal.

I chased my tail on this forever figuring it HAD to be something I screwed up... turns out the drop in compression dropped the load @ idle too much and caused all kinds of problems. A couple revisions later and it idles like a champ @ 850 or so. I should have stopped being stubborn and datalogged the car when the **** first started (although I did find one good sized vacuum leak so it wasnt a total loss)

break in miles are done, only doing 3/4 throttle pulls to 5000 in second and it still feels like a beast. Hot oil pressure @ idle is too low though, stepping up from 5w30 to 10w40 as per MPR. Oil will be here tomorrow (had to order through summit...) then its on to the 500 mile break in (assuming it brings the idle oil pressure up enough...it better, 10 quarts of Driven Racing break in oil was $100!)
