Weird hood/paint cracking/corrosion/something

Anyone know what could have caused this?

Zoomed out to shower general area. Right near the very aft part of the hood.

Clear coat failure? That's my best guess.

Re: Weird hood/paint cracking/corrosion/something

Clear coat has failed. I'm wondering if it actually the original paint. Probably not. Mine did the same thing after a repaint.

Re: Weird hood/paint cracking/corrosion/something

Clear coat failure. Have this exact same thing on my 04 AB, exact same place on the hood, including the deck lid, and roof.

I'm planning on a complete repaint here in the next couple of years.

Looks like a bad clear coat application, or mix. It will need to be removed to bare metal and redone if you want a factory looking job.

Re: Weird hood/paint cracking/corrosion/something

Same thing is happening to my 02 F150 in the same location. only about the size of my palm now. I keep it waxed up with frequent applications of Meguiars NXT & it is barely noticeable to anyone. I think this may help slow the breakdown of the Clearcoat ...at least I feel better doing it!

My truck is the Clearcoat Bright Red paint & it has never been in a garage ever in it's whole life....has to sit out in hot sun, rain & snow....so I can't really complain too much. My sympathies!

When my hood was peeling the worst thing for it was water. After a good rain chunks as big as 5x5 inch would fall off.

Re: Weird hood/paint cracking/corrosion/something

Not sure if it's original paint or not. I bought it was 7500 miles on it 10 years ago so I'm not sure. Didn't see a record of any painting done in the past.

No. I sanded that garbage down and put carbon fiber wrap over the horribleness lol. Way cheaper than a paint job. Also added the family business name logo on the doors. Sanford & Son lol. You know the tune. I hear it every time I drive.

Believe me, this is not isolated to just Fords. I had a little Mitsubishi Eclipse (Chrysler) back in the day...exact same thing happened to it. I've seen numerous Hondas, Toyotas, Chevys, you name it all with the same thing.

It matters not if you wax the car or not. I believe it just comes down to either one of the two (or both); (1) cheap and/or bad paint/clearcoat used by factory -or- (2) a the clearcoat is sprayed on too thinly at the factory, thus making it succeptable to cracking and eventual peeling.

I am planning for a complete repaint down the line. Sucks but like I said, I've seen/had same thing on other cars than Fords.

Re: Weird hood/paint cracking/corrosion/something

OP again sucks that it happen to you, but if you ever thought of changing the stripe on the car and have it widen out, but painted on, now is a time to get it done, when you have the cash to get the hood repainted. I do not know if just wrapping the hood, would take away from that showing through, or have it plasti dip by someone. might be cheaper going with wrapping it or plasti dip, but I would just check with someone on how the turn out would be, if you have considered those two options

LOL, I just saw your reply, I just suggested this to the OP, but did not think about sanding it down, before (if he chooses) to have it wrapped or plasti dip, which might be cheaper than having it resprayed

Re: Weird hood/paint cracking/corrosion/something

Wrapping it is pretty cheap but the surface would need to be smooth. Sanded, filled, primed. Everything you would have to do to get it ready for paint. Imperfections will show in the wrap.
