filing taxes when being disable

so dec2011 i got medical retired and all my checks from the VA are tax free, i just wonder with having two kids if i still would get something back this coming year for tax return, since all my paychecks are tax free.
i figure it would be like when i'm deployed and all paychecks are tax free, i still got money back on tax return for my kids, so didn't know if it was the same

Does your wife work and pay in taxes? Do you file jointly?

Re: filing taxes when being disable

I am just curious, but why did/would you get a tax. Refund if you paid in no taxes? I understand about EIC and all, but maybe I'm missing something?

Why did you get paychecks tax-free and why did you get a refund for your kids?

I'm not trying to sound hateful or ungrateful, so please don't take it that way. I just don't really understand military pay.

Re: filing taxes when being disable

Any disability pay doesnt count as income, taxable I mean.

My wife works and the past 3 years we recieved more than we did when I was in the Air Force and paying taxes.

Had to fill out special paperwork as well though. Due to social security disability and VA disability it required so much extra paperwork that I was unfamiliar with we just hired an accountant to do it. I thought we were going to owe taxes but turned out to be the other way around.

Makes sense on the paperwork. Good luck to ya.

Re: filing taxes when being disable

There are a few different reasons to be able to file your taxes and not have to claim your income because they are tax exempt. One example is if you are a foster parent. Your income is paid to you as tax exempt. That doesn't mean that you can't claim any other income just because my family cares for a foster child. My wife works for a company that deals with people with disabilities or who is Mentally Retarded. We've taken into our home this type of person for over 15 years now and we've never had to claim her income because it's all tax exempt which is marked tax exempt on her checks. Not sure exactly how your situation is Ash buy you should still be able to file jointly and not have to claim your earnings seeing they are tax exempt. That in no way should prevent you or your family from getting all the other benefits due them for paying taxes or having children as dependents. My opinion is you have paid your taxes Ash.

i understand the wife and i was just talking about it and i just wonder how it works, so that is why i was asking, i was just curious to see. i just figure it was like when i was on deployment for 16 months and the whole year but two weeks of that year when i got back from deployment was taxed, but really didn't add up to much, but i still got something back for a tax return for my child, so i figure it would be the same thing, just get back for the children on this tax return. i guess i could go talk to H&R block to see what they say, also this time when i file my taxes i do have a house we just bought this year and will be the first time i'm dealing with a house

i think that is why they make it tax free paychecks, being that you got injury serving your country, its the least they can do.

thank ya'll for the help, just curious about this

Re: filing taxes when being disable

I'm the last guy in the World to understand anything about taxes as I also go to a tax service yearly to have mine done too. However, when we say someone is receiving their pay tax-free or didn't pay any taxes, that's only on their income. Every time you purchase something you're paying a tax as in sales tax, i.e. gasoline, food, and etc. You will have to pay property taxes on your house, normally taxes on your car tags, and etc. We all pay lots of taxes even the poor, disabled, low-income on what have you and purchase. Some people may not pay income tax for various reasons but even they pay a tax if they want to buy gas, food, or anything else not on the black market.

Think I'll call one of Obama care's new 17,000 plus IRS agents and have them look into you declaring your Mach 1 as a dependent and writing off it's huge medical expenses earlier in the year to get well. (J/K )

Yeah, but normally they get you somewhere else with the taxes. I truly think the only place you can live tax-free is in prison and that's okay, I'll keep paying my taxes.
