Why is picking out tires such a PITA?!?!

I need new tires for my stock rims. Though it's for my daily driver, I only commute about 5 miles per day. I think I put 10k on the car in 3 years.

I figure I'm going to have these tires a while, so I want to make a good purchase.

Reading the reviews is just useless, one person will say they are the loudest, the next two will say the quietest. One will say the wet tractiion sucks, and the next will say it's the best for wet traction. It doesn't seem to matter what brand/model I'm reading about...

I feel like just going to Discount Tire and getting whatever tread pattern looks good in my price range.

Re: Why is picking out tires such a PITA?!?!

If I drove that few miles then I would get me some sticky tires like the NT-05 from Nitto.

However, the BF tires mentioned above did me very well. They were a very comfortable tire with decent performance. Good all around tire.

Yes, buying tires are a complete PITA. It always happen that the tires I really want are really expensive. I go through a set in 15 months on average.

Noise, for a performance tire they were awesome. Lowest noise tire I have owned.

Treadwear - I got 26k, most of any tire. However, that last 7k miles they did not have much traction but I think that is pretty normal.

Traction - Wet, very good when new to 50%, after that is a quick downhill race as the tread depth decreases. Again, pretty normal. Traction under hard driving, they break loose but are very predictable. Not a tire I would race on if I wanted my best times.

Re: Why is picking out tires such a PITA?!?!

What's with all this bs-ness about "noise?" People buying knobby Super Swampers for their cars now?? If people are really concerned about how much "noise" their basic street tires are making, they need to step away from any and all vehicles entirely and start walking lol Seriously, how the heck can you hear any noise a tire makes over all the other much louder noises that are all around you?!

OP, if your Mach is just a regular car and will NEVER see a track in any way, shape or form, then just look for a set of tires within your budget. If you've got snow if your area, then shop around for the best snow tires you can afford and be happy with. If it rains a lot, then shop around for tires designed to work best in the rain. Don't have any (much) rain or snow to deal with, then ANY basic tire should due with the little bit of miles you put on it.

Seriously? I take it you have never had a tire that made higher than normal road noise at highway speed. Comes down to preference I guess. I can think of many things I would rather hear than the howling of a tire. Tread pattern has a huge impact on noise.

Some people care, others don't but since the OP obviously cares based on his questions then I give him my feedback as to his points of concern, not that he should not care.

Even if all out performance is not a huge concern, braking distance maybe a huge concern. So, a basic tire may not do the job.

Re: Why is picking out tires such a PITA?!?!

Noise does make a difference when it comes to the quality of the ride. I hate having to crank up the radio to drown out the loud hum/drone caused by the tires. I never realized how much difference tires could make till I changed tires on my old Mustang. The new tires silenced that god aweful noise and were awesome. I wish I remembered what brand that was on the old car...

The tire noise should NOT be louder than the exhaust note...

My apologies, I didn't mean to come off sounding like an @$$ or trash talking. I just thought it was funny! I just can't see how you could hear such a small minuscule sound?! My case, I live in a city, I've got aftermarket exhaust (even with bone stock exhaust I never heard any tire groove noise), and I got my radio/system.

I agree. The only time I've heard my tires making a noise is when I'm driving on @#$% Oklahoma highways. Also hear a hum when I'm traveling on a grooved highway that is being prepared to be repaved.

Haha, no issues here. It is clear you have been very fortunate to have had good tires. When you get a loud tire, you WILL know and you will remember this conversation.

Re: Why is picking out tires such a PITA?!?!

Have you ever been to Tirerack.com?

They have reviews on all tires they sell (100's of them) and they rate them in per catergory and let you know if the where the tire rated in comparison to like tires.

I think they do the best review I've seen thus far.

Funny, you recommended the quietest performance tire I have ever owned...

I grew up in Oklahoma, those roads are just terrible.

Re: Why is picking out tires such a PITA?!?!

Just outta curiosity, which tires are the loudest you've owned? I've used the stock factory tires, Nitto 555's, and a few used tires here and there (such as Michellin[sp?], Goodyear Eagles, and a few lower budget off name brands), when I've had flats that weren't repairable ("in between" tires ). Don't recall ever hearing any tire noise

Nitto 555 have been the worst tires I have had. When they were new that were fine, 5k miles into ownership, they were horrible. Traction went south quickly too. I have not owned a set since. This was back in '06.

Now you tell me (mine will be here Tuesday).

Hopefully they've improved things since 2006. But, I did some checking prior and lot's of people had positive things to say about them.

The only time I have trouble picking out tires,
is when someone stuffed too many on the rack.
I hate that.

Re: Why is picking out tires such a PITA?!?!

I have nitto 555 extreme zrs they were bad. I do like my NT-05 much better. The worst tire Ive used were fuzion zris I think they came on the car and felt like I was skating on ice when it was 90 degrees and bone dry.
The first time I drove my car in tx i thought my louvers were making this humming sound. I figured out it was coming from the roads. It was so annoying when I lived in houston. OK road are terrible! but the roads in Houston suxed as well. They had sink wholes big enough to swallow my streetbike on the freeway. Ive seen seen car engines in the middle of the freeway. and all kinds of other debris. It kept the morning commute interesting!

Sounds like you're after Michelin's Pilot Sport 2 OR 3. Doubt it can get any quieter than those. I work at Discount Tire while in school AND have driven many cars with infinite wheel/tire setups.

Pulled the trigger on Sumitomo HTR Z 111 yesterday. I think I got a good deal.
The reviews looked good and I'm optimistic about the choice.
