Trick Flow OEM style Ford Roller Followers

Has anyone installed these hardened steel replacements?

Since I'm going new billet cams, I'm thinking of replacing the factory followers/lash adjusters with either genuine OEM Ford or possibly the Trick Flow OEM style replacements.

Re: Trick Flow OEM style Ford Roller Followers

I am also thinking of getting the roller followers REM finished. Of course the roller bearing/pins would be pressed out, and the follower bodies sent off for the finish.

I'm also trying to find out if the Ford factory stamped roller followers are heat treated. I'm sure the Trick Flow followers are Ford OEM, except they claim to heat treat the bodies.. Just can't find out info, so far!

I thought "hardened steel"(link) meant the steel was heat treated! Call Trick- Flow and just ask .

Rich, I'm not asking what "hardened steel means".. I'm trying to find out if our factory RF's were hardened. Or if Trick Flow takes the stamped steel Ford RF's to another level and then heat treats them???

I will be calling them. But, I am just curious if anyone out in forum land, has additional info on Trick Flow selling the OEM RF's..??

Sounds good Bill... I would love to go Jesel double roller & sold lash adjuster, but I need that amount of money for the rest of the motor build.

Dammmmmmmmmm Bill..!!!!!!! You just made me mess my shorts!!!! That's one hell of an offer, thank you very much!!!!!!

However, I am attempting to scrape up the money (lots of O/T) to have Fox Lake Power Products port/polish the heads with CNC machinery that produces perfect matching ports. Ron Robarts performance machine shop is awesome and is about an hour from me.

If it does not happen this year, then maybe next year, along with the Jesel double rollers/sold lifters...

Re: Trick Flow OEM style Ford Roller Followers

I have been selling FGT valve train for high reving applications and it appears to be the shiznit. The follower has a deeper recess that the tappet fits into. This setup is alot more stable at RPM's and I havent had one reported failure. The engines I'm speaking of live in the 8K+ range.

But; it's an expensive setup ($1000+) for 32 followers and 16/16 tappets.

Thanks for the info Joe! The Jesel double roller/solid lifter kit is about $3500+... Glad you chimed in!!!! Can you check the price for factory OEM roller followers & hydraulic lash adjusters? Also, do you know if the factory OEM stamped steel follower body is heat treated, along with the lash adjusters?

I know the roller itself, is hardened. Thanks!

Re: Trick Flow OEM style Ford Roller Followers

The stock ford followers/adjusters are all that is needed to at least 8k. The trickflwo stuff will not net you any performance improvements...unless you are running some extremely high valvespring pressures which aren't needed with these very small valves. I personnaly have never seen a follower fail.

The Jesel setup is has it's benefits of course, but are something totally different and can not be comprared to the stock stuff.

The reason I'm staying with the factory OEM style set up.

I know the Trick Flow is not giving any performance advantage. But, if they are heat treated (the follower stamped steel bodies) and the factory OEM stamped steel bodies are not, then I will choose the Trick Flow hardened bodies. Trick Flow OE-style Hardened steel replacements: $11.95 ea.

If I had my choice between factory style follower or Jesel double roller, you better belive I will pick the Jesel even if my motor only spun to 7000 rpms.. But, I can't afford the price like 98% of us.

Exactly! The trick flow flow followers will have the same issues.
If the valvetrain is properly setup there will be no thrown followers or pump up. I've discussed this with a couple guys that build their own motors and spin them to the moon, upwards of 9k.

I understand the benefits of the jesel setup very well.

I've never seen a stock follower fail, even under the most extreme conditions.

What kinda rpms/spring pressures will the motor see?

No, just higher then in the past.

I like to talk about all the different choices out there. I am staying with and have always planned to stay with the factory OE style followers/hydraulic lash lifters. The Trick flow are the factory followers, but trying to find out if our factory stamped steel follower bodies were heat treated or not.

That is good to know the factory follower/lash adjusters can handle serious motors. John M. runs the factory stuff to very high rpms according to the Sean Hyland performance book.

The Crower single springs with valves open: 240/250 lbs. Depends where the new shift point will be, maybe around 7600-7700. The engine will/may see 8000 rpms breifly in between 1-2 shift and the 2-3 shift and missed shifts. I'm just going to have to see how this whole set-up comes together/performs on the dyno.

In the begining when the Sean Hyland Performance book came out back in 2003, he was using/running the factory followers/hydraulic lifters up to 9500 rpms and with an 0w-10 oil, which did not cause lash adjuster pump up.

Sorry Col, Did not mean to indicate he now uses the factory followers/lash adjusters. I would still love to have those Jesel double roller/solid lash posts.

Re: Trick Flow OEM style Ford Roller Followers

Phil, another good choice for an oem follower is the GT(40) follower, part # 4G7Z-6564-AA, seems some of my engine building customers prefer it over the F8AZ-6564-AA "standard" follower....
iirc, it had something to-do wth the oil spray pattern, which is aimed at the cam lobes instead of straight up at the cam cover...

still cant answer you PM wth 100% certainty about whether or not FoMoCo heat treats the followers body, which I highly doubt because of cost
