Cobra T56 6 speed vs Mach 1 5 speed?
Many of you that have had the opportunity to have your Machs for a little bit, wondered what your car would feel like with the 03 cobra T56 6 speed? Any thoughts on how these babies would respond with the extra gear?

I would rather have just about anything else, I am not a real fan of the T-3650

I went with a T-56 from D&D Performance, not the 03 Cobra T-56. I absolutely LOVE it!! I really like having the 5th gear, really surprises the LS1's when I start pulling away from them at 120:THUMBSUP:

I wonder if the T45 trans was better than the one we have? Shifting wise anyway......

I have a friend with an 03 Cobra, and his previous car was an 01 Cobra. Says he might actually like the 5 speed better.

There is another guy here in Tennessee that installed a T56 in his Mach and loves it, too.
I loved the T56 in my cobra I had and want one in the Mach when I get it, so I am already looking for one. I thought the T45 trans was a lot like the ones in the Machs? Oh, anyone know which would be better and cheaper to do? Install forged internals or get a craited short block ordered? |

i'd love to know the price difference from Ford between the T56 and TR3650 .. my 3650 is almost dead.. having had issues from day one (and being given the usual.. oh thats normal for it to be like that ********), i want to see the price diff and possibly pay the diff for Ford to put in the T56 instead of a totally shitty 3650.

did some research on the T-45 vs The 3650. They are not rated to handle the HP that the 3650 can. However there were some key points that I had come across. A few people that had continuous problems out of the 3650 (GTs not machs) went back and put the T-45 in. No more problems on any counts. Here was the big thing that opened my mind the 3650 can not be rebuilt buy anyone other than Ford. Reason is due to parts. Ford has not released these parts to the public. I checked with a lot of reputable places about them making an attempt at it and they just couldnt do it. You can get parts for the T-45. Not to mention there are a couple of quick early cars with them and have had NO problems as of yet. One guy had a '99 cobra vert making some nice power running low 11's hammering the crap out of it. Not to mention I believe it had quite a few miles. Just a thought for some in the future.
Now back to the topic at hand, I believe the 6-speed to be a nice trans that will handle some abuse. The only down fall is the ratio on first gear is such you need to go with a different rear gear to make it up. other than that:THUMBSUP:

Tomcat...
Do you still have the stock 3.55's in or did you change to a different ratio? How do you think 4.10's would work with the T56? |

There is no doubt the T 56 (in some version) is a slicker shifting trans than our 3650. I just see no performance advantage for most of us from the use of the T 56, no matter which of three versions you choose.
You have to be careful which model of T 56 you choose, because our current 3650 has well thought out ratios for use with stock 3.55's and our NA power, and some of the T 56 versions are designed for other power choices or higher TQ applications where taller first gears are useful. The 2.66 first gear of the 03 Cobra or Viper model would kill you on our low TQ NA engines with anywhere near stock power levels with anywhere near stock rear gearing. As a matter of fact, the 03 Cobra trans with 2.66 first has a taller over all first gear ratio with 4.30's (2.66 X 4.30= 11.44) than the stock set up (3.38 X 3.55 = 11.99). I think that might hurt your launch a little (Bog) if you have good traction. The T 56 for modular cars (stronger than 03 Cobra trans and came in 2000 R) with it's first gear of 2.97 is a better choice. But it's ratios between 1-4 are exactly 30% apart for road racing, while the 03 Cobra, Viper model, and 3650 have declining difference ratios, which are probably better for drag racing. Point is this...I don't see how any of the T 56's is an improvement for drag racing with any where near stock power levels. I bet they would slow you down in 1/4. However, for my street use, I could sure enjoy the T 56 Tom is using with about 3.90-4.10 rear gears. MHO

I think most of is Ralph.. are not looking at the T56 in ternms of performance.. but in terms of being able to drive our cars normally.. ALOT of people are having issues with the TR3650.. in my opinion..its crap..
My choice would be the Viper Spec system with 4.30 rear gears.. this gives me a 6th gear that is very close to my 5th gear with the 3.55s and some decent ratios in between. Plus i could drive my car again without all the issues.

Well...now that SpeedCal has their extended range products, even a TKO could probably be made to work. But some claim it soaks up power, probably T 56 does also.
My 3650 is fine, if i had problems, I would be inclined to get a spare, and learn how to do some repairs to it. T 45's can be bought new for around $1000, and they work OK. They are supposed to be weaker than our 3650's, but I used one with over 500 RW for several years, made about 25 strip runs, with no problems at all. Maybe Ford will fix you up (once). Good luck.
