Jumpiness when starting out on a cold engine?

Anyone notice that when you have to jump into a cold engine and drive off without it warming up, that you get a REALLY jerky start for about 30-45 seconds of driving.

I hate to not let it warm up, but I run late quite a bit for work in the morning. I am a night person, not a morning person !?!?!

Thx for the feedback in advance.

Ok I am not alone. Mine does that same thing. You can feel it slightly "bucking" and jerking until it warms up. Funny thing is, my 03 GT did the same thing. I thought it might of had to do with this timing adjuster. I am not going to sit with the car running until it warms up because I shouldnt have to do that. I plan on taking mine in to have them look at the squeeky suspension I have. While im at it they can look at this problem too.

I get like a "jerky" motion at the first stop, about a block away from my garage. Almost like I ran over a pothole or something. After that, it's smooth...But this only happens once & a while.

Hey Sapperstang, mine does exactly what you described. I thought I was alone in this as well. I guess eventually I will have to have it looked at. Let me know what your dealer says.

my gt did it and now my mach does the same thing. i asked one of my buddies at ford and he said they get those complaints on mustangs daily. he said its just the computer getting used to the air. like the humidity and temperature, that kind of stuff. and when it adjusts the jerking stops. in other words he told me get used to it

Ask the dealership to fix this issue using TSB for replacment of the MAF Sensor (Mass Air Flow). Just had mine fixed today. No more bucking.... stalling..... herky jerky feeling.

He's talking out of his a$$ and blowing smoke up yours! It's not normal and there is a TSB for it. MAF sensor will fix it as it did mine.

I had my car in today for the same reason, stalling when its cold and rough engine for the first minute engine is running. They said they could not find anything wrong but did send me home with a data recorder hooked up. Wait till it stalls and press the button, will see if it works. good luck everyone.

For the dudes with the bad starts

If the Mach doesn't want to turnover when you turn the key for a second or two, then this is for you...... I have the horrible and extremely jerky starts. Feels like your going through the windshield, right. Towne Ford in NY is replacing my fuel pump because they say it is leaking off pressure overnight. They noticed the hard start and checked the tranny and clutch, because I wanted them too. They said a lot of people would come in and complain about their 4.6s stalling and jerky starts with no idiot lights. Ford knows about the faulty fuel pumps so ask them to look into it....they are replacing mine.

hope this helps.

Let me know how this turns out. Mine is subtle as well, but I still can't imagine that's "Just how it is".

Re: Jumpiness when starting out on a cold engine?

Mine started today, and is far from subtle.

When I am accelerating (even when fully warmed up), the car will accelerate...hesitate....accelerate...hesitate.... etc....

When sitting at idle, it hunts around somtimes down to 750, sometimes up to 1100. Normally it sits at 900 steady.

I thought I bought a Mustang Mach 1, not a Bucking Bronco.

Mod's are in sig, just replaced the MRT Catted H with a MAC Pro Chamber Catted a few days ago, ran fine for the first 2 days after the change, now today... this crap.

I also have the CREAKS in the front end when turning the wheel to the LEFT ONLY at slow speeds and when stopped. Sounds horrible.

Re: Jumpiness when starting out on a cold engine?

Dudes...

Any of you remember carbs? How about a choke? We're spoiled by fuel injection these days, engines do need to come up to operating temp before they run perfectly. You can't expect you car to run perfectly when it's dead cold...try it in a car with a carb sometime...

Mine runs a little jerky for about 30 seconds... not that big a deal. The car our's is modeled after would run like a bag of sh*t for about 10 minutes from a cold start...save the shop visits for real problems.

For the post above search "steering rack" that is a known problem and the steering rack bushings need to be replaced...mine were 10 months ago, and no noise since...

Re: Jumpiness when starting out on a cold engine?

Mine does this as well. Taking it soon for the windshield "wind noise" TSB and will add this TSB to it also.
