I Need New Tires. Recommendations Please

My KDWs are shot and while the tread is still good, they are hard, loud, and starting to crack. Currently I'm runnimg 275/35/18 Front and 295/35/18 rears. If I don't do wheels my car will be stored on the tires over winter in a non heated garage so freezing temps are an issue. If I end up doing wheels, I'll use the old set for storage. Mileage is no issue since I put around 800 miles a year on the car. I keep seeing Toyo R888 as a recommendation for the rears and Toyo fronts. I was also looking at nitto NT05's all around. I don't mind a drag radial style tire on the rear as long as there's no issues with my non reinforced torque boxes and the freezing thing. I usually do not go to the track but may go occasionally.

The Nitto G2s are great and I hear good things about the NT05s

Re: I Need New Tires. Recommendations Please

I've used a dozen or so sets of NT05s. The NT05R is the drag radial.

Sounds good. Yeah I'm leaning towards nitto just not sure which tire. Some say the 555 is good and some say trash. Would the regular nt05 be OK to run for street use? Also would they need stored in a warm climate for winter?

The NT05 is a great street tire that can also stand up to the abuse of road course use which is what I use them for. I'll bet that it will be the stickiest tire you have ever had and handling is outstanding. They're even pretty good when it's cold if you give them a few minutes to warm up. I think they are the best Ultra High Performance street tire in my size for the money. Way better than the P-Zeros on my Trak Pak GT. I don't think storage temp matters. In fact cooler is better.

If I ran the regular nt05 up front, I'm sure performance will be excellent, but how many miles can I expect out of them? 100% street duty. Since nitto changed the 555 to that new cheezy tread pattern I'm looking at other options for when the time comes. I'm pretty much settled on the nt05r when my 555r's are done so the matching nt05 up front would seem ideal..Thanks for the input.

I have no idea, results may vary. It's a 200 TW tire. On my GT I got almost 30,000 out of the original 200 TW Pirelli P Zeros. Unless you are drag racing I would use the 05s all the way around so you can rotate.

If I could get 20k I would be happy. Is that expectation too tall? Do they sling rocks down the side of the car?

My wheels/tires are staggered so rotating is not an option. And racing is very much a concern so a drag radial is a must. Regular tires on the back would probably be the most dangerous thing I could put on the car.

I would think that 15-20 is a reasonable expectation. I have never had a problem with them slinging rocks. I use a 275/40-17 on a 9 1/2" Enkei RPF-1 and the primary use for my car is track days on road courses. Now the whole front end looks sand blasted from track use but the sides and back look real clean.

Re: I Need New Tires. Recommendations Please

Glad to see this thread. I currently have Mickey Thompson Street Comps and I don't recommend them. The BFG gForce Comp II's I previously had seemed to be stickier. I don't really get her out in the rain anymore, so I can't say anything about their wet performance. Tire wear seems okay, but I really haven't put that many miles on them yet either. They do fit the wheels great, but so do Nittos. Mine are 17x9 with 275/40 and 17x10.5 with 315/35.

I've had that BFG and thought they were crap compared to the NT05.

Thanks for the feedback. Those rpf1's are bad azz. I nearly bought a set at one time. So light.

I broke an American Muscle 95R clone on track and swore I would never buy any junk Chinese wheels again. The RPF-1s are 1/2" wider, 9 lbs lighter and much stronger.

That's good to know! I'm feeling pretty good about the NT05's.

Any issues at a full lock turn with those 9.5" wheels and 275? My 9" with 275 have no issues but I'm not sure how much more room I've got up there.

Probably go with a 275/35/18 up front and a 295/35/18 in the rear Nt05's then. That's more than enough miles for me. The tires will be hard and cracked before I wear them out for sure. For the setup above it looks to be around 940 bucks. LMR has a setup with SVE drifts for around 1600 bucks but you have to go with a 265/35/18 up front and a 285/35/18 out back. I like the width on the car looks wise now and a few reviews say these Nt05's run smaller width wise. There's not much savings in buying the wheels and tires separately.

I'd buy the rims and tires separately to get what you want. I had to do that on our 06 as the sizes American Muscle had didn't make much sense to me. I'm glad I did too. The tires fit exactly how I wanted.

Re: I Need New Tires. Recommendations Please

Running the G2's now myself. very happy with them. took the car out on TWS a few months back and the tires were great. I am no authority on anything road-race or auto-cross, but the car went where I put it, where the instructor put it, and the tires held up just fine. I was impressed, so was my instructor...

Nice on the street.

Actually I did with the cheap Chinese 95R AM knockoffs. Tire would slightly rub the swaybar on the ps. These 9.5" RPF-1s have no problem. I haven't measured anything but I'm guessing the offset is a little different. I'll tell you this too, going from a 25 lb wheel to a 16 lb made a sop difference in acceleration and handling.

The NT05s do run a little smaller than some.

I bet they did. Being not only rotational weight but also unsprung. The best kinds of weight to lose. Better braking as well as better fuel mileage in a city environment. Did you get yours from discount or? You've got the wheels turning (no pun intended). Dammit jrick...

I buy 4-5 sets of NT05s a year from Discount Tire so they sold me the RPF-1s at close to their cost. When I asked how much they were going to cost the guy said to not worry about it and that he would take care of me. When they came in I was pleasantly surprised at the cost. I think they were $7?? something.

They made as much difference in the buttometer as going from the OEM 355 gear to my current 373.

I'd like to get a new set of wheels as well as the tires but home remodeling is gonna keep the fr500s on there for now. With everyone putting the mickey Thompson SC-5's on clearance it's very tempting. Also thought about going down to a 17" wheel but I'm not sure if I'd like the look since I've had 18" wheels for so long. I wish more people had these wheels to see what they look like.
