Do I need a built rear end?
I just got some Mickey Thompson ET Street SS tires, 275 40 17's for some nine inch wheels,
because with the new torque converter, I just spin the 315 Nitto 555 tires, like crazy. When I put the new tires on am I going to be stressing my axles to the point of breaking them? All of the mods I have done are for in my sig. I'm not even making 300 horsepower so I don't think I will have to. What do you think?

Re: Do I need a built rear end?
You don't mention axles or diff in your sig. I would definitely go Ford Trak Loc with 31 spline carbon fiber clutches and 31 spline axles. best bet is Strange, I had to shim my calipers for my Mosers.

Re: Do I need a built rear end?
My rear end is stock with the exception of the gears. I can see how you would benefit from upgrading the axles and the diff because of your supercharger, but I am all stock. Do you guys think it's necessary to upgrade the diff and axles with no power adder? I'm not trying to be a cheapskate or anything but if this isn't necessary, I would rather put my money elsewhere.

Re: Do I need a built rear end?
It's not how much poewer I make, you make enough that if you dead hook, or wheel hop, theres a good chance that you'll break a 28 spline axle and have to have your whole 3td cleaned, not to mention the tow.. Your call.

Re: Do I need a built rear end?
Are you taking it to the strip or just street? What rpm do you launch at if you are on the strip? Autos launch a lot softer than manuals do and don't abuse the axles as much.
I'm not saying autos don't need them but if your just pounding it on the street you should be okay. If it sees the strip anytime I would upgrade. Peace of mind means a lot when you are at the line and wanna see if the car can take another couple thousand rpm launch cause the track is sticking and you just wanna go faster. Good luck with your build. |

Re: Do I need a built rear end?
Old school approach here, and i know some will disagree with me...
If you are going to try and make the car hook...build it and don't look back. Good posi, good axles, and be done..31spline of course. I built mine years ago...I had my 4.10's sitting around from my old fox, so i did not have the added cost of a gearset, just posi, axles and install. as always JMHO...

Re: Do I need a built rear end?
with an auto, you could prolly be ok with stock, you could go the cheap route and just toss some 28 spline mosers in it. my thought is if your gonna tear into might as well build for the future. so 31 spline along with the diff of your choice.

Re: Do I need a built rear end?
Yes I agree. I think that's what I'm going to do. Everyone seems to agree on the 31 spline Moser axles but what about the diff? I was thinking about going with a Ford Racing traction Lok. Is that what you guys would go with too?

This above statement is very true.
