Help with my 04 Aviator

There is a whine in the area of the power steering pump It ramps up and down with RPMs. Thought at first it was the alternator. But its coming from the area of the PS pump. I used my scope and it picks up the whine on the pump. Read on an SUV forum that it could be the idler pully Is that possible???? Thoughts???? Is a whine that ramps with RPMs a normal sound when a PS pump is starting to fail?

That sounds about right. If the noise is coming from the ps pulley then its gotta go. Pretty commmen ford thing I think

Check the fluid. they all make that type of racket when low on fluid or going bad.

Fluid level was good. I sucked all the fluid out of the and replaced it with Lucas PS fluid/conditioner. I think its actually working. The noise is getting less and less. Probably just a bandaid. I checked at Advance Auto today and a rebuilt pump is about $60. Never changed one out. Is it a tough job?
