Re: D1SC build
1) i would talk to todd warren (na svt) about cam choice, hes the guru.
2) my stock displacement 4.6 -10:1 motor with comp cams Xtreme Energy blower/nitrous cam (cant remember if stage 1 or 2) with a 3.5" pulley made 14.8 psi with a little belt slip (8 rib but old thump tensioner with the bad design). personally id run the 3.8 and get a bigger crank pulley for more boost. Im spinning to 7k

Re: D1SC build
So warmer weather is almost here, and I'm getting ready to swap blower cams into this engine. What tools are absolutely necessary? I have a degree wheel kit, and the valve spring tool that works for 2 valves and the exhaust(I may have gotten this flip flopped) side of the 4v. I found a place to order a kit with the crank holding tool, the cam holding tool, and alignment plates where I can return them afterwards for 50% of what I paid. I can't find an affordable place to rent/buy the other valve spring compressor tool, and it's $180 new.
Does anyone know which of these tools are absolutely necessary to properly install and degree these cams with .480 lift? the cam sprockets in there do seem to be the adjustable kind, so that's a plus. I just want to make sure I'm not throwing money away. If there's a way to get by without buying that $180 spring compressor that would be awesome, but I also want to make sure I'm doing this job right.

Re: D1SC build
Is that the freedom racing tool or something like that? I don’t remember what I paid for the tool but I resold it and got most of my money back

Re: D1SC build
Yes, that's the place I was going to buy the tool kit. they are sold out of the 4v spring tool though so that's not an option through them unfortunately.

Re: D1SC build
Would this tool on ebay do the same job as the ford tool? Seems a lot more reasonable price wise but I'm always skeptical with ebay stuff.

Re: D1SC build
Waiting on my cams still, got a hold of Modular Head Shop last week and they said they were waiting for one more core from their supplier. should be on their way soon. in the mean time, I got my gauges from SpeedHut & the dash pods from Ortiz Customs, and installed them this week.
I wanted the lights and font to match as closely as possible to the original lettering and the red LEDs I had put in. Speedhut has a lot of customization available, including adding logos/emblems on the gauge face. installation was pretty simple, there were instructions for each gauge as well as wiring harnesses. had to ditch the screw on collars on the back of the gauges and wrap electrical tape to get enough resistance for the gauges to sit in the cups, since there was no other way to hold them in there.

looks good!
I gotta say though, when the power hits in mine you arent able to look at the damned gauges lol I went creeping through your album, I definitely need to get more of my piping from the fender to TB welded, looks waaaaay better

Re: D1SC build
Thanks! The intake tube came that way, I'm guessing the previous owner did it that way. It was kind of a pain to get it into the fender with that power pipe, they both had to be in the hole but then you had to twist it around and wiggle them both into place.

Re: D1SC build
Still waiting on the cams for the built engine, and there's an 8 week backlog before the transmission guy will start building mine, so the engine swap is on hold for a couple months. Can't stop me from enjoying the boost though. I can confirm, paying attention to the gauges when you're getting after it is nearly impossible. They have warning lights you can set though, so the oil pressure will have a blinding red LED showing if it ever hits 5 or less psi.
Found out today the clutch that came with the built engine is actually a McLeod Street Twin rated for 1200+ hp, so I'm planning to sell that and get a single disk clutch more suited for my build. I thought it was the RST rated for 800+, still more than I was planning but not quite as much overkill. Looking at getting a Spec Stage 2+. Has anyone had any experience with this clutch? It sounds great on paper.

Re: D1SC build
Why not use the twin? I just put in an RXT swapping out my Spec 3+. One of the best mods I've done! Feels like a stock clutch pedal!

Re: D1SC build
I'm afraid it'll be too much of an 'on/off' switch. my car sees mostly street use, so I don't really need some hardcore race clutch in there. if it were the RST I would just run it, but I'm usually not taking off at every red light like I'm racing lol.

Re: D1SC build
I don't feel that to be the case at all. But then I've been so used to the spec 3+ that this thing feels like but compared!

Re: D1SC build
Keep the McLeod. It's absolutely not an on/off switch. I have the RXT twin disc and it's very streetable.

Re: D1SC build
I have zero complaints about the RXT on the street, its perfectly friendly.
The RST is NOT meant for any track use it seems, if you track it they wont warranty it at all.

Re: D1SC build
Finally got the cams. I will be installing them in the built engine soon, but it will be a slow pace. I want to do it right the first time, so I'm going to be re-reading the instructions about a thousand times while I do it. While the valve covers are off I'm going to have them re-painted wrinkle red. The blue that's on there isn't bad, but if there was going to be any colors other than black in my car I wanted them to be red or silver.

Re: D1SC build
Update time. I’ve been working on swapping the cams in a little bit at a time. I got stuck scratching my head when I got to degreeing/checking the centerlines on the new cams. I am following the directions from Comp that came with the cams, and using a trickflow degree kit. Using Comp’s centerline method, I am getting the following readings fairly consistently:
P EX 121 P IN 111 D EX 117 D IN 113 Advertised intake/exhaust centerlines were 110/120 I don’t trust the dial indicator readings 100%, mostly because I needed to tape an Allen wrench to the end of it to make it long enough. That being said, I checked each reading 6 times. My method was to set up the dial indicator, check twice, rearrange the indicator a little, check twice again, move it once more and check again. The above numbers were fairly consistent unless something got bumped. Wrote everything down in a notebook while I was doing it. One thing to note is I did not have everything torqued down when I took the readings, but all the bolts were snugged and chains had tension. So the question is what do I look at next? Should I jump right to advancing/retarding the driver side until they match the passenger side? The engine came with adjustable sprockets for the intake cams and the primary chains. Could the variance be attributed to not having everything torqued when I took the readings? I’m not gonna bother with the ones that are off by 1 degree since that could just be my readings being off, but the driver side worries me a little.

Re: D1SC build
ugh, and this is where my lack of cam understanding really shows... when I had my comp cams put in years ago MHS said one of the cams was way the hell off, something about how it was made incorrectly...like the centerline wasnt actually the center line? Again I've never installed a set so its Greek to me and this also like 8 years ago

Re: D1SC build
I took some measurements again tonight, except with no solid lifters, and everything is all torqued to spec. I think I figured out where the variances were coming from; this time I was getting very different readings, but consistently. After scratching my head for a bit I realized the chain tension was probably not consistent throughout my readings. I was rolling the crank forward and backward to get the .050" reading on the degree wheel before and after max lift on the valves in cylinders 1 and 6 as suggested in the Comp instructions. However, I wasn't paying attention to the primary chain tension. I was rolling back a bit past .050" so that I would remove the chain slop before I got back to it, but the primary tensioners take a lot of forward movement to get fully tensioned apparently. I think the only way to make sure they stay tensioned is to keep moving the crank forward. I'm going to order a 6" extension for the dial indicator, and do this thing right.
Somewhat related question: Do blower cams normally have overlap, or no? I was curious, and to my surprise the exhaust valves come to a close exactly the same time the intake valves start opening. it's my understanding that in NA engines there is a bit of overlap to help draw intake gases into the chamber with the venturi effect. Does a blower engine not need this since the intake will be pressurized? I'm definitely glad I'm doing this myself. I'm learning quite a bit about this engine and how these things work. Also, when I removed the valve covers and timing cover, I discovered they had been painted on the inside. really glad I chose to get them repainted, my guy is gonna get them nice and clean on the inside so there won't be any paint flaking into the valve train.

Re: D1SC build
glad it sounds like you've got it figured
and from what I understand you typically dont have much or anything for overlap as youd just be sending boost out the exhaust valve

Re: D1SC build
Ya I did a bit more reading on that today, I guess I got confused with all the tech articles explaining overlap and all the other cam science stuff. its a lot to absorb but its easier when the engine is right there in front of you.

Re: D1SC build
Before I forget again, I had 5 hydraulic lifters that were stuck all the way open (they don’t depress at all). Is this a concern? Is there a way to unstick them?
