removing vht and burn out rubber off bumper

i have seen dozens of threads on this and involve goo gone or wd40 or multiple other types solvent based ways to clean.

but all those leave a black/ gray haze on my white baby. i have found something that works awesome and dosent smear or stain the bumber

dawn dish soap and magic eraser worked awsome and very fast

Make sure you re wax any area you used the products, double check any area with good light to make sure magic eraser didn't harm clear.

I use turtle wax brand Bug and Tar remover ,works really quick without any hard rubbing.

Re: removing vht and burn out rubber off bumper

i hardly had to press at all but if you use a rag or micro fiber or normal sponge it holds the chunks of rubber and then smears the magic eraser really dosent and i didnt see any type of scratches at but and i did rewax the area with my meguiar's tech 2.o full synthetic wax and just to clarify cause i know someone will ask any type of oil/grease detergent will remove your wax

Dawn strips wax. So, as stated, always re-wax after using.

Magic Eraser eats clear coat. I wouldn't EVER use this on my car. A friend used it on his Infiniti to get the bugs off his front bumper and hood...it took ALL the clear coat off and he had to get repainted...expensive lesson. Hopefully you haven't damaged any clear coat yet...

Re: removing vht and burn out rubber off bumper

nope no damage at all i looked at it with the drop light at all angles and i couldnt find a single bit of damage

how did he remove the clear coat with a magic eraser its like 2000 grit wet paper and even higher when you add soap to the mix did he do it dry?

and good news is i can repaint the bumper if it eventualy wears through but anyone that has ever wet sanded clear it takes forever to sand to deep except on corners

Another good bit of advice I read somewhere years ago. Before making any passes...hit the areas behind the wheel openings with a heavy coat of wax...but don't wipe/buff it off. Leave the thick haze of wax on it. It makes it easier to remove the wax/VHT after the fact.

Im not sure I would do that IMO.

90% of all wax says not in direct sunlight and wait till hazes up then remove.
If your going to track on sunny day I woulndt want the wax cooking in the sun all day.

Re: removing vht and burn out rubber off bumper

The magic eraser chemicals are what ate the clear coat - not the texture. He only used a wet magic eraser on his car when it ate the clear. Maybe you diluting it with soap is preventing it from happening on your car.

You can buy a thin plastic film to put on the rear quarters prior to racing to protect the bumper.

Re: removing vht and burn out rubber off bumper

well it was a bit of a long story but i was in a hurry to head to the track to meet up with a fellow registry member and forgot my masking tape that i normally use cause its cheap and quick.

and there is no chemicals in a magic eraser its a type of foam and thats it unless you get one of the bathroom uless you get one of the super erasers or a bathroom one

and as stated above IT IS ABRAISIVE TO THE Paint Dont press hard and lots of soap and water

i haven't tried it yet but a micro fiber towel and a dish soap would probably do the same quality without having to worry about doing damage

it actualy has more to do with the removing of the wax while it is hot out like the surface of a black car in the summer can be 120+ degrees in the summer here in ny the hotter the paint is the softer it is just like any other plastic just my 2 cents

so if your worried about scrathing the paint removing it then use soap and water and dont try to rub it off with the paint hot and dont forget that there will be dirt and stones mixed with the rubber so have to be careful removing it after racing

Re: removing vht and burn out rubber off bumper

Interesting - I didn't know about the magic eraser just being a special type of foam. I had just assumed it had a chemical in it due to the way it my my skin feel after using it.

Guess my buddy just scrubbed too hard!

Re: removing vht and burn out rubber off bumper

I use the wax on the fender technique, works great on my car! Here is how I usually apply it, you can see the white haze on the bumper.

It's fair to be concerned, but I know plenty of folks that have had good luck with this. We're talking a really small area behind the rear wheel wells, which would rarely be in direct sunlight given their positioning and the downward/inward slope. It's just one option among many.
