high output alternator of choice?

I need a higher output alternator than stock thanks to the return style fuel system, gauges, stereo etc... My understanding is stock is around 120 with so Im thinking anywhere from 160-200.

I know theres several out there - PA, mechman etc... any feedback on who tends to make the most reliable unit or has the best warranty backing it?

Have you thought about upgrading yours? I picked up the parts to upgrade my stock one to 200amp. Only down side is it needs a little more RPM to charge at idle.

Re: high output alternator of choice?

I dont know a single thing about upgrading an alternator, got a link to the parts? how hard was it? Whats your idle RPM and how many volts are you seeing?

was talking to justin wheeler over at j2fabrication, he does the oem intercooler flow upgrades (bigger ports in and out etc...). It looks like he took over start n charge and supposedly doing a better job. His price on a 200amp unit with wire upgrade shipped is $400. It would be nice to support a small veteran owned business. His warranty is 1 year

it looks like Mechman is about the same price and their site says 2 year warranty (no wiring upgrades included)

I think I have the link saved on my work computer. I can check after the holiday. It really wasn't that hard. In fact I replaced the voltage regulator in my old one after work today because I was bored.

If you get the upgrade kit it comes with new windings, bearings, rectifier, and regulator. The only "hard" part was soldering the windings to the rectifier. But I have a good soldering iron at work. I ended up replacing the rotor as well just to have it all new. All parts were under $200. My current idle is set at 750rpm. My idle voltage is around 12. I think if I installed my 4lb lower I'd be good.

FWIW, I had a local shop upgrade the alternator on my 01 to 200amp. I had the stock 8 rib pulley and an ATI 12% crank pulley. Never had charging issues with it.

It listed several replacement parts and just one upgrade kit that was to 240A! I didn't see wiring within the kit, but I assume you need to upgrade the wiring to the alternator..?

I couldn't link the list, so I snagged a screenshot.

It doesn't come with a wiring upgrade. I think American Muscle has kits. I ended up making my own so that I could route it how I wanted. Yeah, the stock is 130amp. At least that style on my 01 was 130amp. On the 03/04 Cobras it's only 110. I painted my case while everything was apart. Not that anyone sees it in my case. But I felt better.

Thanks! I'll look at their wiring kits. Same here..my aluminum shell has that white-ish residue from how the aluminum corrodes over time. I don't think it's pitted though.

Re: high output alternator of choice?

I had mine rebuilt to 200A and converted to one wire, cost about $75. At idle see 13.8V

Re: high output alternator of choice?

I use a Powermaster 200 amp alternator.
200 AMP Alternator Features:
- Internally regulated with OEM hook-up
- High output, with excellent idle performance
- Hand wound, custom designed stators
- Heavy duty regulators and rectifiers
- Gold plated battery post for better electrical connections
- Dual internal fans
- 6 groove serpentine pulley
- 125 AMPS @ 2400 RPM; Max. Alt. RPM: 18,000
- Proof of performance tags

Choose from a black finish, a chrome plated finish or a natural finish to suit your performance and style needs.

Re: high output alternator of choice?

I ended up ordering from j2fabrication, same guy that does the intercooler flow upgrades for the factory PD blower cars. Veteran owned business that appears to stand behind his work so I gave it a shot. I got his wiring kit too, we'll see how it goes

Did you have to upgrade the wiring to the alternator?

I did upgrade the size gauge wire from the trunk mounted battery kit, but it was not required for the factory wiring with battery still in engine compartment.
