At a time of .25c/gal. gas it's hard to believe Ford was pushing a fuel economy 'special' but that's what the Mustang E was. With a six cylinder engine, auto tranny w/economy torque converter, they are not easy to spot unless they are in the original paint with the large "Mustang E" script on the quarter panels.

For Sunday; in '72 Ford offered a patriotic package on the Mustang, as well as on the Pinto and Maverick. Offered in 'Package A' and 'Package B' as a regular option on coupes and fastbacks there were also 50 'A Package' convertibles built. What was this package called?

The Sprint package consisted of white paint with blue hood stripes outlined by red pinstriping, and similar trim on the lower rocker panels. A blue tailight panel and special 'USA' shields on the rear quartes completed the exterior package while the interior had special whiet vinyl seats with blue inserts of an almost denim material. The A-Package had a 302 2V with 14 in. wheels and tires, while the B-Package consisted of the 351 engine with 15 in. Magnums.

For today; SVT is best known to us for their work on the Cobra. They have also had a hand in three other Ford products that are or were available with SVT packages, what vehicles are they?

Even though I lump the Cobra R's ('93,'95,and'00) with the regular Cobras, you're right on the $ with the Lightning, Contour, and Focus! Good work!

Thanks, Frank! I think that'll be a great question for today: What was the special performance Mustang built from '84 to '86 with a three letter designation that was the same as the Ford performance section? And: On the center console there was a switch for the fog lamps as with so many other Mustangs...what was the other switch on the console for? (It is unique to this car, so forget traction control)

SVO - Special Vehicle Operations which was formed in 1981. As for the other part of the question, I have no idea what the switch was for.

SVO

That would be the SVO Mustang (also Merkur XR4TI from Linoln/Mercury). As for the dash switch I'm not sure. Maybe something to do with the turbo boost control?

Right on the money. The SVO was also the first Mustang to come with 4 wheel disc brakes from the factory as well as being the first INTERCOOLED and Turbocharged Mustang. The switch on the dash was indeed for the engine management system, a problem that is now handled by the engine computer. As far as the XR4Ti Merkur, the way Ford handled that situation made me ill. The euro versions included the RS 500 and RS 5000 very high performance versions as well as an XR4X4, there was also a V-8 version called the XR-8, and no we never got those either.

While we're on the subject of mid-80's cars; What Shelby inspired item was the most noticible feature on the 20th Anniversary Mustang in '84? What were the two engine options?

The most noticible feature was the G.T. 350 racing stripe along the rocker pannel. A total of 5260 units were made around the GT package. Both the turbo charged 140 c.i. (2.3-liter) EFI engine or the 302 (5.0-liter) V8 were available. It was only offered in Oxford White with Canyon Red interior.

Side note: No one at Ford got permission from Carroll Shelby and Carroll, who was working for Lee Iacocca at Chrysler at the time, sued Ford over the incident.

There was also "supposed" to be a new 5.0 introduced mid-year around the time the 20th ann. cars were, it was to be a 205 h.p. roller cammed engine in 84, but never came about. It is even listed on the microfiche (or used to be), but so was the 1971 Boss 302 ( which know became a 351)...

There were two V8s for that year. Both 302 (5.0-liter) but one was a EFI with throttle body electronic fuel injection rated at 175 HP @ 4000 RPM and a 4-BBL version rated at 165 HP @ 3800 RPM.

In addition a 232-cid (3.8-liter) 120 HP V6 engine was offered along with three inline four 140-cid (2.3-liter) engines. A 1-bbl rated at 88 HP, an EFI Turbo rated at 145 HP, and a EFI SVO rated at 175 HP

The higher output 302 V8 rated at 205 HP was announced for a December arrival but delayed until the 1985 model year and when it did come out it was rated at 210 HP.

For 1986, the 302-cid (5.0-liter) EFI High Output(sequential port fuel injection) V8 engine was the only V8 offered this year and was rated at 200 HP@4400 RPMs with torque at 285 lbs-ft.

This engine had redesigned heads, and improved water pump, and a stronger block design. This engine was standard in all GTs and an option for the LX

In 1985 the GTs 5.0-liter H.O. (4-bbl.) was rated at 210 HP by the use of low-friction roller tappets and high-performance camshaft. In addition, stainless stell headers replaced the cast-iron manifolds. New accessory drive system that reduced the air conditioner compressor, power steering pump, and alternator to half speed also helped.

The fuel-injection (EFI) version of the 5.0, only available with the automatic transmission, produced 165 HP@4200 RPM. 1985 was the last year for the 4-bbl carburetor on the 5.0-liter H.O. engine.

Great information from everybody on this, looks like I really struck a nerve with the Fox body crowd. The 6 cyl. was not available in the Anniversary car, but both the Turbo 4 cyl. and the 5.0 V-8 was. I was wondering if anyone would point out that there were in fact two 5.0's that year. At the time the easiest way to tell the difference from the outside was that the Auto/fuelie car had the dual tips exitiing on one side and the 4V cars had dual tailpipes exiting on either side. You guys (and gals) are making this tough on me, I hope you're having fun though!

The 165 hp is wrong is 180hp in EFI in 85 GT Auto.
here's pic of my old 85GT
Well, I looked into it some more and I have found Mustang books both ways. The Standard Catalog of Mustangs 1964-2001 by Brad Bowling does indeed reflect 165 HP for the automatic version that year. However, I looked at a couple of more sources and found the 180 HP figure.

So, I figure you own the car and you ought to know so 180 HP it is. Oh by the way, nice 85 GT you have there.
