Re: Trivia for today
For today: It's pretty amazing how much power the current crop of high performance cars come with. Our Mach 1's are rated at 305 hp (OK it's actually 319, but I'm using published numbers here), and the new GT500 is pegged at 'over' 450hp. Remember that the resurrection of the modern muscle car started with the '82 Mustang GT and its 5.0 (302) H.O. 2V engine (the fastest production American car that year) and it took off from there. What was the hp rating for this milestone in modern muscle car era? How about the 289 K code hi-po engine (regular Mustang and Shelby version)? The 428 Cobra Jet? And the highest output of the 5.0, the '93 Cobra 'R'?

Re: Trivia for today
'82 Mustang GT and its 5.0 (302) H.O. 2V engine A Whopping 157 hp.
How about the 289 K code hi-po engine (regular Mustang 271 hp. and Shelby version 306 for the N/A version, not sure on the Paxton supercharged version) The 428 Cobra Jet 335 hp. and the highest output of the 5.0, the '93 Cobra 'R'? 235...actually, the '94 and '95 were rated higher at 240 hp.

Re: Trivia for today
Can't find the power of the super charger, yet, but it was a $670 option in 1966. And car 0051 received the only known factory application of GT-350S (S for supercharged) side stripes.

It was rated at 390 hp and while it had the "GT-350S" side stripe, it did not have the blue stripes on the hood, body and trunk a normal white GT-350 would have. I have the road test for it somewhere in an old "Car Life" magazine from back in 1966. Best I remember, it wasn't that fast...something like 14.0 at 102 in the quarter.

Re: Trivia for today
Bill, ya' done good. Sorry for the goof up on the '93 Cobra R 5.0 part of the question, but I threw it in at the last second and forgot to check my sources. Other than that all the numbers look good. Oddly enough I am looking at a reprint of that exact vintage GT-350S road test from Car Life. The 14.0 @ 92mph is right on the money. Amazing how much things have progressed in 40 years, and especially in the last 23. Amazingly, it was a huge deal when the Fox body car came over the 200hp mark. Now, to get 200hp, you have to get a V-6. More amazing is that my first new car ('82 GT 5.0) had the same hp rating as my second new car ('92 Probe GT 2.5 DOHC V-6)!

Re: Trivia for today
WOW that 14.0 print is funny. IT had to be because of traction. My 65 ran a 14.93. Only things not factory were tires (of course) - firehawks, pertronix ignition and octane booster. I couldn't get traction all through first gear.

Re: Trivia for today
Traction was always the issue with the old muscle cars and 1/4 mile times...the old tires just didn't grip well, and the stock suspension didn't help either. It'll be interesting to see what my wife's 66 does on the track when we get it back from the body restoration. It's got a 289 that's putting out about 320 hp, and we've added a T-5 and 3.27 gears with an Auburn posi in it.

Re: Trivia for today
Traction is even more an issue wiht todays cars. Even though the suspensions are more thought out, the higher power outputs still cause the driveline to overtake the tires. Our stock Mach 1's can annihilate a set of rear tires with no difficulty.
The book I got the times from is Brooklands Books publication with a number of vintage road test. Here are some more 1/4 mile times given. '66 GT-350 [289 hi-po 4V]14.7@90mph '66 GT-350H [289 hi-po auto 4V] 15.2@93mph '67 GT-500 [428 p.i. 8V]15.0@95mph '67 GT-350 [289 hi-po 4V]15.3@91mph '68 GT-350 [302 4V]14.9@94mph '68 GT-500KR [428 CJ 4V]14.57@99.55mph There are other tests out there, and this is just a sample. I just thought it would be interesting to see what little difference there was between the highly tuned small blocks, relative easy working big blocks and the cars we have availble to us today.

Re: Trivia for today
Yeah, those old poly glass Goodyears weren't worth much at the track.

Re: Trivia for today
What did Henry Ford invent that we all used yesterday?
Hint: It has nothing to do with automobiles

Re: Trivia for today
I don't know if Henry had anything to do with holidays off...I just know I didn't have one on Monday...but he is famous for his 'fair wage' programs...now if I could just get one of those...

Re: Trivia for today
Okay.
According to the History Channel's "Automobiles", Henry Ford agreed to sell the Ford Motor Company to GM's founder Billy Durant. Why didn't the deal go through?

Re: Trivia for today
This was the first I've heard about that one. I do know that the Henry Ford Motor Co. was sold and became what is now known as Cadillac. I also know that Durant died penniless, as happened to many warly automotive pioneers.

Re: Trivia for today
There were a few trivia tidbits in that show.
During one of the low points for Mr. Ford's company, he struck a deal with Durant to buy Ford for $8M dollars. Ford stipulated that it had to be in cash. Durant agreed. Durant was having trouble raising the cash. By the time he did, Ford's company had emerged from the slump and his asking price soared to over $30M. Durant pulled out of the deal.

Interestingly, Ford's designer at the time, his name escapes me, went with the sale of the company that became Cadillac (as you said). He eventually left and formed a new company that would later become Lincoln.

A little vague Mr. Frank...if you're actually looking at various body styles there were: two door, four door, convertible, and station wagon.
