Question Radiator fan help..electrical aspect

Hey guys, I have tossed this around in other threads , so giving it a home! Long story short, brought car to dealer with no high speed, but had low (low on at 172-174, high speed on at 181). Dealer changed CCRM, got home and put in new radiator (fan was new). Now I have high speed but no low (and fan comes on with A/C). I went ahead as well and changed reistor on the fan. Under the hood on passenger side front by air cleaner is a one fuse (30A) box that I found is for the fan. I checked and no power there with key on, upon starting and no power at fuse when I hit low fan temp setting in my tune. Anyone knew exactly when this fuse gets power? As well from a wiring perspective, is there another fuse somewhere supplying power to this 30 A single fuse? As well, can't find info on where power enters this fuse holder and where it goes out to. Any help would be great...also I did a Exhaust gas test in coolant and results were negative and I have no coolant in oil ( car tends to run hot driving..water pump about 2 years old..a stocker, and 170 Stant T stat with hole drilled less than a year old)..thanks again for any help fellow Mach 1 enthusiasts

Re: Radiator fan help..electrical aspect

how are you sure youre getting high speed and not low would be my biggest question? Would suck to be chasing it backwards. I think Id grab a test light or volt meter and check the voltage at the fan connector at low and high speed turn on temps just to be 100% sure the low leg isnt getting power.

I dunno if that fuse is pre or post CCRM. I would try to find a pinout for the CCRM (the service manual I acquired doesnt have the wiring portion sadly). Then check when conditions are correct for low speed and see if the pins into the CCRM that should trigger low speed are getting voltage. If they are then you check the appropriate pin(s) coming out of the CCRM. Then you just keep moving up or down the line based on where you lose power.

Re: Radiator fan help..electrical aspect

Oh, it's not done..got second ccrm..yea, ypu guessed it , no low speed at 174, high came on at 179..dealer now is gonna have me leave car to verify it's not me and the actual part is bad...so to verify there crap isn't working, gonna bring my old one where they can see low comes on with it, and not another issue with car..yea, that luck kicking in and it IS the correct ccrm, must have been a bad batch, really weird how my old one gives me low and new one's don't.

Re: Radiator fan help..electrical aspect

What a nightmare. Dealer hooked up laptop and thru the PCM with car off was able to control ccrm to have Low and High speed fan worked...when we started car, at lo turn on temp fan came on lo for a millisecond then went to high..if we weren't looking at laptop would have missed it. I drained coolant resvoir from full to half (Morose tank). I drove home, car stayed at 181 driving (92 degree day), and upon stopping hit 191 but fan cooled it back down..thought I was done, good to go. Not...Tonight went for ride, car did good, 183 degrees for 15 miles, then temp started climbing. Stopped for 20 minutes..drove again..60 mph temp climbed to 230 degreen and at a stop sign car died and my fuel pressure gage showed 100 psi. Temp would not come down so I pulled over for half hour to cool. I drove home doing 30 mph and temp stayed at 230 degrees. What's weird is as temp tried to drop, fuel pressure came down, but still high (50 psi vs normal 30 psi) I pulled in barn and fan running on high, temp went to 217..what is weird is is front of radiator cool o touch from fan and on a metal coolant tank could hold my hand flat on it for a slow 8 count before too hot (this with Aero force gage showing 217 degrees but dash gage dead in the middle) I need help !!!! Seems intermittent. .one ride temp does fine, then the high temp...been burped really good..so..water pump?? (It is a stock from AM about 3 years ago), new 170 T stat last year. Could a flaking out PCM be causing all these issues??? I am to the point the car I loved I now hate..haven't driven an uneventful ride in YEARS..I am ALWAYS working on this cooling issue and have changed everything associated with cooling twice...please guys..chime in, to the point just want to sell car and that is a BAD place to be. Thanks guys.

Re: Radiator fan help..electrical aspect

Oh, dealer mechanic thinks it is a "weak" PCM...wonder if there is any fuses/ relays for PCM should replace..especially any relays.

Re: Radiator fan help..electrical aspect

I went ahead an ordered Edelbrock pump, Ford I Ring, Mishicot 170 T stat and will draw coolant in on a vacuum to ENSURE no air pockets.

I’m with little mags, put a **** switch in so you know high speed is running so long as the switch is on. Then drive it and see if you have coolant temp problems still.

Re: Radiator fan help..electrical aspect

Fan works fine, my issue is when I am driving, temp is erractic..one minute for 15 miles car at 183 degrees...stop, drive again, 190, climbing and hits 230..telling me flow problem..water pump or erractic T stat , which I have had bad luck with T stats, that's why gonna try the Mishimoto..also gonna take off the atv fans on heat exchanger, they don't blow much air and blocking incoming air.

Re: Radiator fan help..electrical aspect

with the weird **** youve got going on I would not put it past the fan to be behaving erratically. Unless you're driving at a constant speed of like 50-60+ and it does it in which case the fan should be off at that speed anyway.

Cant remember if Ive said it here or not but my lightning would run just fine then temps would shoot up and come back down shortly after - it was getting on occasional air pocket due to a leaky head gasket. Mine was blown in such a way it was dripping water between head and block so no combustion gasses in the water or water in the oil. It was a very small drip, not even really noticeable looking at the coolant res

if you've got a mechanical water pump I find it hard to believe thats the issue, its rpm driven so it either spins and moves water or it doesnt. I just fail to see how it could stop flowing.

with the thermostat, for testing purposes just take the ***** out for now and be 100% sure. It'll take a while to warm up but once it gets up to temp you'll see.

lastly, consider that the temp sending unit could be bad as well.

edit again - I think you have a super oddball fan issue or a head gasket personally. The temp sender being an outside hope that its something stupid like that

Re: Radiator fan help..electrical aspect

Yea, I am leaning to head gasket as well,,figure I would draw a vacuum since I did combustion gas tester and it passed..I changed the coolant temp sensor under the crossover tube, reading temps from Aeroforce. Fan tested fine at dealer when tech manually ran low and high thru pcm to ccrm...will update when I know more and thanks for your input !!

Re: Radiator fan help..electrical aspect

I’d use a switch or jumper to force the fan on high and make it stay there.

Still having issues take the thermostat out

Still having issues it’s gasket and headstud time

Re: Radiator fan help..electrical aspect

All true, I had Kurgan send me 2 tunes..one the fan is on low speed as soon as you start the car and runs on low until you hit high speed temp (181), 2nd tune has more temp separation between low and high..next week new water pump and T stat..when we put a vacuum on it we will know head gasket status.

Re: Radiator fan help..electrical aspect

i really hope its a stupid fan issue, while it might be maddening to figure out its gotta end up cheaper/easier than head gaskets.

throwing a new vent canister in my car hoping that solves my fuel filling issues then I can go onto the alternator not charging right @ idle (damned high output aftermarket one)

Re: Radiator fan help..electrical aspect

I had my stock alternator rebuilt to 200 and converted to 1 wire using a battery cable for hookup, with a 3.20 pulley has lasted 2+ years, 14 V at idle, pretty amazing since Cobra alt known to eat up, good luck and thanks for your inputs, will update soon, parts came in yesterday, love the AM discount !

Re: Radiator fan help..electrical aspect

Update...new Edelbrock water pump, new 170 Mishmoto T stat, new coolant, fan on low constant at start up, high speed on at 181-182, new coolant vacummed and burped. Cruising around temp stayed between 160 and 175...did a 3rd gear pull, temp went to 225 to 230 and didn't want to come back down, some coolant vented out the cap, filled morose tank to high and didn't allow for expansion, so lowered level and been running burp heat cycles daily in the barn, hell, gonna try a new cap as well, and started a thread about air deflectors (I have the one on the bottom, are there side ones as well). That's it for now, pretty much doing the same thing..cruise all day, temp perfect, get in the throttle for a little fun, temp climbs and it heat soaks and doesn't want to come back down even with fan running on high, maybe a it is what it is deal...thanks guys

Re: Radiator fan help..electrical aspect

i posted in there but those things arent going to make THAT big of a difference. If one pull is doing this something else is going on man. You've exhausted the coolant system route and now you run too cold most of the time imho.

Re: Radiator fan help..electrical aspect

Thanks, yea 90 degrees out run about 170 to 175, if I stop may go to 185, but high speed kicks on and temp comes down, only on a hard 3rd gear pull temp climbs, then doesn't want to come down, figured deflectors may help concentrate air, new cap coming so looks like I deal with it for now, maybe the Whipple generates heat, I would think a head gasket issue would happen at idle or year round, he'll on 40 degree day lucky if temp hits 160, think ypu are right though, like a random air pocket at a higher rpm ???
