Re: Hanging/Slow dropping RPM FIX inside.

I have an A/T and sometimes when I let off the gas, the RPMs will kinda "bounce" when coasting, like the tranny is trying to downshift. Is this a symptom that the restrictor plate could fix as well, or is this probably something else that's wrong?

Re: Hanging/Slow dropping RPM FIX inside.

I finally got around to doing this mod. It took about 15 min. I bought a $.22 piece of aluminum flashing at Lowes. It makes the real low rpm shifting for the city easier. 5/16 hole and no problems.

Re: Hanging/Slow dropping RPM FIX inside.

I just did this mod tonight... Only have had the car a week and a half, and the hanging RPMs have been annoying the hell out of me! It makes normal stop light to stop light driving anything but smooth, and I hate the "driving itself" feeling. I've been also occasionally having RPMs hang 1000-1200 at idle.

Didn't take very long to do, drilled the hole 9/32, put it on and everything seems good to go on the first try! Took it for a drive, it's so much smoother to drive! I think I'm going to try another one with a slightly smaller hole to try and get them to drop a bit faster. But otherwise this was a great fix!

Re: Hanging/Slow dropping RPM FIX inside.

the higher start rpm's are needed to get the motor warm and everything working properly....just like a choke on an older engine...my edelbrock 600 cfm electric choke wont idle the 302 down till about 5-6 minutes of actual driving.

The reason for the slower off-the-line feeling for most people is the motor at low rpm's isnt running at its best, nor is it able to demand as much air needed to make combustion. with the smaller air hole, this will hurt off-the-line, however, at higher rpm the motor will pull the air it needs easier...

That is one of my plates.
I have been selling them since this discussion started back in the summer of '04 and Fordman was one of my earliest customers.

First, understand the problem. The engine is recieving too much air through the IAC valve. From my knowledge Ford did this for emissions reasons.
This can be adjusted in the tune. There are two sub-categories, one is called "dashpot gain", the other is called "dashpot decay rate". "Dashpot clip" can be worked with as well, but it's not always necessary.

Kudos for the mechanical ingenuity, but I'd like to note that the problem described should be attempted to be fixed electronically first.

Re: Hanging/Slow dropping RPM FIX inside.

Steve, are these adjustments something that could possibly fix my "bouncing" RPM issue as well? When coasting, my RPMs bounce up and down, kinda surging.

Yep. I'll PM you the details so I don't clutter up the thread any more. If there is pertinent information that comes out of it, we can post it later.

Re: Hanging/Slow dropping RPM FIX inside.

5/16" finally fixed it I think.... 9/32" caused the car to idle at 1200 RPMS, wouldn't drop down.... I'll take it out in the morning to see how she runs...

EDIT****
Well the test drive wasn't too good,,, started hanging at 3,000 rpms.... went to 11/32" plate, still hangs but at least it's drivable....

Say what? The IAC has NOTHING to do with off idle response. It controls idle speed when the T/P is closed. Another cause of a hanging idle (and this is right out of the Ford Service Manual, Powertrain Control/ Emissions Diagnosis) is a bad PCV valve.

Re: Hanging/Slow dropping RPM FIX inside.

Has anybody experienced this: I made a plate with a 5/16 hole in it, installed and checked for leak with carb spray, so far so good. Idles fine even with a/c on, and rpm's definetly come down quicker, now here's my problem, after I drive for a while when I go to stop,as I push in the clutch to start slowing down and my car revs to about 2000 or so all by itself and then dies. It does this every time after my car worms up, I can take the plate out and it's fine, I put the plate back in, same problem?? Thanx for the help

Re: Hanging/Slow dropping RPM FIX inside.

How long does your rpms take to drop back when you push in the clutch?

Mine would actually increase 100 rpms then slowly drop back to idle.

well with the RAI installed they would drop very fast, it would drop down to idle, pass idle and turn off(only when over 50-60),probably another problem but still
