Hood Insulation Pad

Just wanted to pass along that my local Ford dealership said they no longer have replacements for the Mach 1 hood pads. I found this out when they changed my oil and forgot to put the cap on. Anyway, they cleaned up everything and replaced my hood pad with a GT pad. I wanted to share the differences you can see. Might make used hood pads worth a little more.

^drivers side. The gap is about an inch or so.

^more drivers side.

^passenger side. Gap is about an inch.

I'll post more pics later since the daylight through the hood was kinda messing up the pics.

Re: Hood Insulation Pad

I happen to have the original one off my previous car. It shows some sign of wear in the foil backing, but otherwise, it's reasonable for replacement. You can use show polish or paint to get the darker black look back.

Let me know if you would be interested in purchasing it! We aren't too far from each other.

I've actually been thinking about removing the pad all together because of the fitment. Do we even need one? Is it just for engine noise or does it have another underlying purpose?

Re: Hood Insulation Pad

I always thought it was to keep the engine heat from baking the hood but I could be wrong.

Best not too I'm sure,
Question: given you received the GT insulator instead from the dealer I think you said, why the issue on fit? What I mean is; given the GT must cover the whole hood, wasn't it just a matter of cutting out the same size hole.. perhaps the dealer did at best an OK job cutting too quick? When I look at this one from American Muscle it seems to cover the whole Surface area so... I hae to assume if I match the factory hole perfectly it should fit reasonably well no?

I took mine off and never had an issue. I believe it is for if the engine catches fire, it falls down and covers the fire. Looks better without it IMO

Kinda' what I was thinking. OP should take it back to dealer and have them install another piece. Third time is charm. Better to cut a small hole and then enlarge than to cut too big of a hole.

I agree someone needs to make a replacement pad.

From what I could tell looking at pics I had of the underside of the hood, the Mach 1 insulator is a bit different than a cut-out standard hood pad. It looks like it is raised to match the plastic shaker frame that mounts on the hood. With the GT piece, it leaves a gap from the pad to the underside of that frame. Its around an inch if I remember right. I'm not so sure it would look much better if I had them cut another one. It would fit fine if it wasn't for the plastic shaker frame that comes down to touch the shaker gutter.

Re: Hood Insulation Pad

Right.. my only thought was the GT piece is one that covers the entre surface under the hood so the dealer must have rushed cutting out the hole .. hence the GAP because they made the hole a bit too big... unless... the Ford factory GT pad has a hole in the middle which I doubt.

Given the American Muscle one covers the whole surface.. it's gotta be a touchdown if we carefully lay the factory one on top of the new one (The GT pad that is) and mark the pattern to match 100% even if it has to bend up a bit it just means pressing and matching the shape. I think I'll give it a try,

Thanks!

I hadn't thought about that. It could work indeed if you can use the extra from the hole to put in 'behind' so it brings the pad out to the shaker frame. I should try this too!

Re: Hood Insulation Pad

my question is why did you except it looking like that? if they did that to my car they would have had to call the police to make me leave.

Re: Hood Insulation Pad

Mach 1 hood has what Ford called a power buldge almost like a cowl hood compared to the flatter GT hood...not surprised a GT hood liner can't be made to fit very well.

After finding out Ford didn't sell the hood pads anymore, I just let it go. I'm not sure anyone has noticed, but I think a Mach 1 owner would.

Re: Hood Insulation Pad

Looking back, what I should have done is removed the original liner myself. That way, if the new one didn't look good, I'd have the original to stick back in.

Sounds like you mean the shaker frame on the hood, correct?

I'm with you Jeff. I've been trying to find an aftermarket Mach 1 hood pad for years. Looks like we are screwed!!
