Antiques Roadshow kinda thread...

I was thinking the other day about what I would bring out to Antiques Roadshow if they were to come to my area. I figured there may be others here who have a goodie or two that may not be car related that they may not show here otherwise. Post up and let's do a 'show and tell'!
Heck, some here may have onformatin about items that you migh thave that you have little or no knowledge about, history-wise or value-wise.

These are Apollo 11 era pieces I've had for some years; one is a launch/press pass w/a coin, the other is a patch that was sent out by Tang, and the other piece is a ribbon to celebrate the mmon landing. I'm really curious to have these looked at by professionals and appraised one day.

Re: Antiques Roadshow kinda thread...

When I went back home before going to the Talladega race, we must have been watching something WWII related and my dad brought out these 5 volumes of books. They were books that covered pre-WW II starting in 1938 and went through the entire WWII until 1945. These books are nothing but page after page of pictures from the war. I mean thousands of pictures, and graphic too. These books were like the only things he ever got after his dad died back in 1968. The books are in excellent condition and I bet most of the pictures in those books have been seen by very few people in the 60+ years since they were taken. I told my dad if that Antique Roadshow ever comes close to Iowa to take those books there and have them appraised. He agreed.

Re: Antiques Roadshow kinda thread...

I've got a bunch of late 50's thru early 70's baseball cards that my Mother had saved and gave them back to me in the early 90's before she passed away. I was a huge Nolan Ryan fan and have over 500 individual different cards including probably nearly every Topps card he was ever on dating back to his rookie year.

Plus I a rather large collection of auto magazines from the 60's and 70's. I've got complete years for many like Car Life, Hot Rod, Road & Track, Car & Drive, Motor Trend and misc others.

Wow! I'd be very interested in hearing more details about those. My dad had a set of what sounds like the same or a very similar set of books from the same time frame. I used to look at them years ago, I seem to recall they had very intricate embossing on the covers. I recall that many of the photos, especailly in the later years of the war were very 'graphic'.

Very cool, Bill. I'm sure that there is a big market for Nolan Ryan stiff. I know baseball cards took a big hit back in the late 90s, when they had the strike. But I think the true collectible cards will always be a good thing to hang on to. It seems like the newer stuff is more flash in the pan. I've got the Shaq cards to prove it!
I'v got a few older car magazines as well. It's cool to go back and see what was available back then, as well as the ads. Seeing an entire set of Cragar wheels for $99.95 just kills me!

If I remember right they were just plain jane looking. The books are a dull red in color. Each volume is broken up into years. About 1 year or so per volume. Actually I think it was 1939 when the volumes start, not 1938, so it includes alot of European fighting before we entered. If you love pictures and not reading (me), then these are the perfect books. Literally, almost every page is pictures with quite afew pages being 2 pics per page, and each book is at least 250 pages I'd say. This is one set of books I want passed down to me.

Re: Antiques Roadshow kinda thread...

Here's a few pictures of a mirror and box that was made by a gentleman back about 1900. It's a good example of folk art and it could even be prison art. Why I think it could be prison art is because of the time involved in making the pieces. I was told by a friends grandfather who was born in 1888 that it was his uncle who had made them. Back in the day cigar boxes were made of some types of wood. It took a lot of cigars to make the mirror as each piece was probably cut by hand and then notched on all sides. Each piece getting smaller until a special piece was glued on the tops to cover the nail. Not really sure what the value of something like this and always wanted to bring it to the roadshow if they were in my area. I received the mirror and box back in the 70's. I've also included a bottle of Greek Brandy that is probably over a hundred years old. My wife's mother is a true Greek and this was passed down from a great great grandmother. The bottle is in execellent condition and I believe the company may be still in business. When I check the internet the name has changes a little but I believe them to be the same. On there site a 7 year old bottle of brandy goes for about 700 dollar. I wonder what they would sell a 100+ year old bottle for.

If I was serving life in prison I might be able to make Lincoln Logs at best.

Lincoln Logs? I'd be lucky to whittle out toothpicks!

Those are all beautiful pieces that anyone woudl be lucky to have. Just don't show Russ, OK!?!

T-Bolt, I'm gonna have to go dig out those books at my parents tomorrow. It sound like we've both got folks with the same thing!

Re: Antiques Roadshow kinda thread...

Only have a few things that could be considered collectible, besides my diecast car collection. One thing is an original set of Vargas playing cards circa 1950's. Instead of the typical red reverse side, these are green. Complete set in dang near mint condition. Another is a WW2 Japanese infantry flag that my grandfather brought back from overseas, along with an Arisaka type 96 infantry rifle. Also have an 1944 Enfield No 4 Mk 1 Long Branch with flip up rear sight. Not a lot, but hey I'm poor white trash .

Here's a few pics....

Re: Antiques Roadshow kinda thread...

My Pawpaw (granddad) that passed away a few years back, left two swords he picked up in Japan off some dead guy. My dad and uncle will each get one when their mom passes. I would love to know what those things are worth.

I also have 20 or so unopened packs of Desert Storm stamped baseball cards. They are the same collection and images of the same cards for that year. but in the bottom left hand corner there is a Glod Leaf Operation Desert Storm shield embossed on each card. I went to a card shop here locally about ten years ago, and the guy had never seen them. Told me that the unopened packs ( they still have a stick of old nasty dried up chewing gum in them) may be worth $20 bucks each. He said that certain players ( if I opened them) Like Cal Ripken, could be worth ten times as much as the normal card with no stamp. at the time he said he would give me $35 for Cal Ripken. Well I only opened ten or so packs out of the thirty or more that I have. ( that was hard to do as a kid) I have a few Cards that are open in a card case sitting next to the normal Identical card like Chipper Jones. Pretty cool. But I am no longer into Cards. I would bring those as well.
