Updating my Oil separator on the drivers side

I noticed even with the JLT I was getting some oil into the intake, it was just a mist. I decided to use the JLT along with the "hardware store" separator and will continue to monitor the situation.

I was concerned so I put the car in the garage for a few days to do some maintenance. I checked the DS cylinders and the compression was within a few points of last time. The leakdown check actually looked better this time than last.

It's running stronger than ever so I guess my motor is just fond of oil vapors.

Pics when I get done ---- I've got it all done except the separator itself. Lowes is the only place that has the small ones and when they upgraded to the Kobalt name the design changed and it won't work for me.

I have about a day of cleaning to do when it gets done.

Re: Updating my Oil separator on the drivers side

Why is it that your oil seperator is different than mine. My JLT looks like chiat. It has the rubber piece of tubing that goes from the bottom of the JLT to the little black thing that bolts on to the drivers side valve cover..

Re: Updating my Oil separator on the drivers side

Clean install. Looks real good.
I'll be updating mine soon as well. I was not impressed after a few months. Rubber gasket starting to pullout and set off the check engine. An air leak.
So, I took it off.
Just my thoughts.

I ditched the heated PCV, bought some grommets for the cam cover/top of prefilter, bought a new PCV valve with a 90 at the top, switched to small fuel line (won't suck shut from vacuum), bought a badazz separator mount (Fore Precision), still looking for a separator (out of stock), and will seal the valve on the bottom of the separtor (most don't like vacuum).

THAT'S WHY.

Re: Updating my Oil separator on the drivers side

I agree, the original setup for the JLT has a tendency to fall apart. At least that was my experience.

It seems sturdy the way I have it now. The separator mount is awesome, it uses holes that are already there. The top holes are angled to allow the separator to follow the lines of the inner fender. I have a nicer clamp for joining the tubes at the intake but if I don't need further mods I'm going to bond them and ditch the clamp completely.

Re: Updating my Oil separator on the drivers side

Almost all of the hardware, home improvement stores, etc ... have updated the 1/4" in/outlet separators to mount differently than the old models. I have the part number for the one with the two screw holes on top and will post it when I get home today.

You can drill and tap some of them to work but several models (husky and kobalt) have tops that orient the in/outlets in a way that won't allow two screws to be used with the Fore mount. These models also have drain valves that will require securing the knob to prevent vacuum leaks. I would just seal the bottom of the bowl and not use the drain. The old style had a schrader valve which seemed to work fine.

Part number coming soon.

Re: Updating my Oil separator on the drivers side

Just noticed I didn't update the install pics. I've been driving it so there is some dirt under the hood.

It retains the f/s functions and does not dump liquid or vapor. If you go through a visual inspection it could very well fail because it is altered from stock. It should have no affect on emissions and would probably be an improvement. It's NOT an issue in AL.

Re: Updating my Oil separator on the drivers side

For anyones reference, I also used a small fuel line and got my seperator from ACE hardware - looks almost exactly like the others.

This thing is insanely good for my daily driving, I am keeping all the "fluid" it pulls out in a mason jar so I can see all the crap I saved after a year or two. Sad I drove 5000 miles w/o one!

Re: Updating my Oil separator on the drivers side

Reference the type hose used, I had the fuel line lying around but don't trust it long-term. I have some reinforced hose that is oil resistant I plan to switch to when I'm happy with the layout (it's expensive). I've had larger fuel hose and air compressor hose both collapse in the past.

My current problem is the short distance available in the top of the JLT prefilter for a PCV valve. The current setup has resulted in the valve topping out of the grommet a couple of times. I tightened the fit some and that should fix that problem. We shall see, I'm looking for a simple solution that kicks the problems butt.
