Englishtown, NJ Raceway Park Drag Strip Closed for Good

As of yesterday all drag racing operations have ceased at the track and the drag strip employees were let go.
The famous 1/4 mile will now have a few limited shows during the year and house a bunch of vehicles for an auto auction company called Copart out of Texas.
Drag racing fans in the area are screwed...

Just read about that on John Force Racing Instagram. Been there many a times to watch the National events back in the 90's.

Sucks that local have to go else where though.

Makes you feel any better, Royal Purple (formally know to those of us who grew up around here as Houston Raceway Park) took on the storage duties for a large number of the flood vehicles we had here in the Houston and surrounding areas after Harvey rolled on thru...supposedly they are starting up racing activities again here soon, but we have the same fear that this will be the fate of HRP as well.

I am truly sorry to hear that about Englishtown. Always wanted to make a pass or two on that Iconic track...

Our big, new 1/4 mile track in Crandall (that I don't think was even open for 10 years) closed not long ago as well. Theyre not an easy business to keep rolling these days. Which is sort of ironic given this proliferation of muscle and performance cars. Luckily, we still have Ennis (Texas Motorplex) and a couple 1/8 mile strips here and there.

Funny you mentioned what all this... E-town got a taste of car storage money during Superstorm Sandy for the same reasons. And now a company based out of Texas named Copart is leasing the property for what seems to be an obscene amount of money to store cars for auctions. Drag racing times are really tough right now so if this keeps them a float and maybe some day it reopens then so be it. I have 2 other tracks in NJ to go to but E-town was my favorite recently. In the closing of E-town we actually lose 2 drag strips, they had a 1/4 mile and an 1/8 mile track operating simultaneously. Locally we need to support the tracks we have left.

We have to encourage others to support the tracks. Once they go away its tough to get them back.

Basically I'm hearing it was a better financial move for the owners. Business is business, this would be guaranteed money 12 months a year. Racing in NJ is from March to November typically. Rumor mill saying 15 years $75 million but just rumors.

for that kind of money, cant say I blame em.

I was very surprised that out local track got new ownership who promptly poured a ton of money into the place.

Yeah I doubt the drag racing operation over the 9 months its open is bringing in $5 million.
That must be Moroso/Orlando Speed world?? My cousin's husband Edgar used to go there. I recall he said they cancel on cold nights, like in 60 degrees. Here I'm thinking in NJ we are heading to the track t0o go fast its cool out... lol

I think it's that more and more people are also getting interest in road racing and Drifting. They both seem to be having an uptick in popularity which leaves tracks that do 1/4 only out in the cold. Even OEM's have picked up on that with cars like the new GT Performance Pack Level 2, GT350, and 1LE's have shown that handeling is now just important, if not more important than straight line. Hellcats and Demons get lots of hype, but they also seem to have high turnover as they tend to be one trick pony's.

I agree, and Englishtown has only ceased operations on the drag racing side. They have several other activities still going on.

Road Course
MX/Quad practice track
Large MX track
Go Kart

Upset its shut down but can't fault the decision.

My wife and I use to love to go and also watch Drag racing, but now with the shorter length and a lot more drama we have steered away from it for years.
