2004 Mach 1 Hesitating
A few weeks ago I noticed a slight hesitation under low RPM's while accelerating. The problem slowly started getting worse so I took it to my mechanic. He said he thought one of the cylinders was missing, but since the check engine light was not on, the computer would not tell him which cylinder was misfiring. The problem has gotten much worse and the check engine light is still not coming on. It is now hesitating throughout the RMP range and is very noticeable. Any ideas of what the problem could be?

Re: 2004 Mach 1 Hesitating
I like this ...since the MIL light is not on he does not know what to do? The computer mis -fire count has to get to a certain number of mis -fires before it set off the MIL light. In some cases it may be so random it wont ever trip the MIL at all. However you can take a COP off each plug one at a time while the engine is running or just run Fords cylinder balance test.

Re: 2004 Mach 1 Hesitating
My problem was the same as yours. I got progressivly worse and started around 15-2500 rpm under light accel.
My issue was the front 02 sensors. I may have a slight misfire but cant tell right now. Pulled the COP off one at a time and all had the same effect. Could be a few issues tho. GL

A bad or weak injector can cause this , wiring to the PCM or PCM itself.Best to take the car to the Dealer and get them to do an NGS scan on the whole system.

Re: 2004 Mach 1 Hesitating
how many miles on the car.
really this could be so many things. Maf, COP, Injecor, o2. need to have someone hook up a scanner and take a look.

When was the last time you changed your fuel filter?

Re: 2004 Mach 1 Hesitating
Has close to 60k miles on it, and never changed the fuel filter which I'm now realizing was probably a huge mistake by me.

Re: 2004 Mach 1 Hesitating
Someone on here told me, if you're getting some random misfires, go wide open throttle to about 90mph and you'll get your CEL..
I did that, and sure enough I did, and wound up replacing the #4 cylinder COP

Re: 2004 Mach 1 Hesitating
This could also be something as simple as changing fouled out spark plugs. My friend has an '02 GT that was having the exact same problems you have been describing. The hesitation he was experiencing was awful. Pulled the plugs out and they actually didn't look too bad. The worst of them were on cylindars 3 and 5. Regardless, after the swap the car is running like new. I hope this is the issue with yours and not something more serious (and expensive). Good luck.

Re: 2004 Mach 1 Hesitating
Tried going 90 today, got it up to about 100 and still no check engine light. However there was only hesitation in 5th gear for about 10 seconds on the highway, other then that it was fine all day. Going to change the fuel filter tomorrow and drive it again and see if that fixes anything. Thanks

Re: 2004 Mach 1 Hesitating
Took it to the dealer service today and found out I need a new spark plug and coil in one of the cylinders. Anyone know of where I can find install info? Also I want to get the motorcraft coil, but am having trouble finding the exact one I need. Found a few that say they fit but not sure which to get. Thanks

Re: 2004 Mach 1 Hesitating
They are so easy to change!
Driver's side: Remove the two 10mm bolts from the cover that says "V8 32 Valve" and lift off cover. The coils are right under there. Passenger side: With flatblade screwdriver, loose clamps at MAF sensor and throttle body and remove the intake tube and set aside Remove the two 10mm bolts from the coil cover and lift off cover. The coils are right under there. When reinstalling covers, make sure gaskets are straight in cover, and harnesses towards rear do not get pinched by cover.

I couldn't afford to change all 8 personally.. I changed all my plugs, and used dielectric grease on all connections on the remaining coils

TRY some 44k at a 1/4 tank and fill with 93 that should help. How many on the clock?

Re: 2004 Mach 1 Hesitating
Mine was missing when I first got the car, and after "cleaning" my engine bay a little water from misting it off got in the coil cover and it got worse causing my check engine light to come on. Ended up replacing all my spark plugs and one COP and it was perfect after that.
