Automatic Transmission Fluid Change

Sorry if this has been mentioned before, I looked but could only find 5spd procedures. What is the process for changing an automatic transmissions fluid and what tools would you recommend? What fluid is best?

Also slightly off topic and in the wrong section, any suggestion for changing the front inner tie rods?

Thanks all.

It's been awhile, but usually I remove the pan bolts except for one side. Then I slowly loosen those which should cause the pan to tip. You might have to pry it away from the case to get things started. But as the fluid draining slows you can loosen the bolts a little more until the fluid is drained. Then drop the pan and swap out the filter and reinstall the pan with your gasket of choice. Add about 4 quarts then start the car and put it into each gear for a second. Check the level and add as needed.

This is more of a drain and fill. I don't usually do a full flush on a trans that has some miles on it. But there are more steps of you want to do a full flush.

As for the inner tie rod ends you have to remove the clamp holding the boot on. Slide the boot back and unscrew the tie rod. I'd replace both inner and outer personally. Measure the old set up and make the new one match. You can get new boots as well. I did when I did my tie rod ends.

Re: Automatic Transmission Fluid Change

One other question. What would you guys recommend as far as a new gasket and filter? I’m not sure where to get them at. Thanks.

Re: Automatic Transmission Fluid Change

I use wix filters. I also used valvoline synthetic transmission fluid as well. Been happy with both.

I have been looking into the JMOD. Everyone says it is easy but after reading the instructions it seems rather involved. Not as easy as opening it up, pulling some springs and drilling some holes. Is it as hard as it seems?

Re: Automatic Transmission Fluid Change

So the main reason I wanted to do the fluid change was because my car has been starting to shift hard on every gear change. Like a hard jerk each change. Thanks to everyone’s great advice on here I had no trouble draining the pan and got about 5 quarts of nasty black crap out. I replaced it with 4 quarts of Mercon V and one quart of Lucas tranny fix and then needed to top it off with a bit more Mercon V. However my tranny is still shifting very hard which I never did before. Is this weird? It’s not irritating or hurting performance. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Re: Automatic Transmission Fluid Change

Recently changed the fluid in my Mach1 that has 112K on the clock. I was inside the pan because I felt my valve body was going bad, my car shifted early and was not as crisp as it used to be. Did some research and found a plate inside the valve body eventual cracks from use giving me the conditions I was experiencing. I replaced the valve body and the fluid, reused the factory gasket as it is reusable and possible the best gasket that should not leak. The car is shifting a little stiffer as I bought an aftermarket from PA transmissions bought that is what I wanted. The car had a firmer shift when it was new and had a tune in the car to firm the shift points. I used Amalie synthetic universal trans fluid with no issues to date. Mine used 8 quarts to refill the trans, a bunch more fluid came out after dropping the valve body.

Re: Automatic Transmission Fluid Change

Good info in that last (old I know) post.
Slomach03, what was the outcome for you?
I think the EPC solenoid took a dump...or did the trans need a rebuild?
