service engine soon light

what does it mean?
I thought it must come up at intervals to do the oil changes etc as it came on at almost exactly 140000kms but from the bits of info i've found it means there is a fault?? is that right?

If so, how do i get the fault code out of it?

Cool Re: service engine soon light

It means the computer has found a fault. Go to Autozone and have the read your OBII port for the code or codes. They use to do this for free. Then look the code or codes up online for the fix. If you have a hand held tuner you can read it yourself.

Re: service engine soon light

thanks guys.
was planning to change the oil anyway but the light came on the very first time i drove the car! haha
does it need to be reset with the computer or will it reset itself if the fault goes away?
I have a handheld code reader but its from a late 80's early 90's model so i don't think it will work for this car.

Re: service engine soon light

Do parts stores in New Zealand offer scanning services? Here in the states we can go to Autozone and they will scan OBD2 codes for free.

To clear the code, disconnect the battery for 10 minutes. The computer will be reset.

Does the car have an aftermarket midpipe?

Re: service engine soon light

No, midpipe is standard. As far as i know the parts stores here don't do that but i might look into it.

Will an aftermarket midpipe mess with the O2 sensors or something?

I think i probably have a fault with my O2 sensors as it had its emmissions test yesterday and it barely passed. Can the sensors just be cleaned or do they need to be replaced?
