Question about DYNO NUMBERS please HELP

Hey I was just wondering since the mach 1's have factory knock sensors which pull a bunch of timing particuarly at 4k and above, are you just shutting off the knock sensors to make the power?

A few SCT and Diablo tuners in my area told me that without turning the knock sensors off there weren't able to get much if any power out of mach 1 due to the knock sensors pulling timing.

Bascially i am asking those people dynoing 285-305 rwhp SAE, do you know if your tuner is turning off the knock sensors or leaving them on and doing some other complicated adjustments.

I'm afraid turning off the knock sensors to make power will lead to problems with the engine and i value my car more than i do 10rwhp if it means keeping the knock sensors and not getting a tune to make everything safe.

Re: Question about DYNO NUMBERS

If I understand correctly, the knock sensors will only pull timing if they detect pinging or detonation. Otherwise they will not pull timing simply because of what rpm you are at.

If a tuner says that they can not get more power due to the knock sensors they are saying that if they lean out the car or add timing it will cause the car to ping and trip the knock sensors. If your car has not been tuned before and you are N/A, I do not see why they could not tune your car for a few more horses without causing detonation. Most everone else has.

Re: Question about DYNO NUMBERS

The problem is that the knock sensors have too much variability in them, on some cars they pull timing without any ping. Remember the knock sensors are essentially vibration sensors, and if they are a bit off then you lose timing. Mine were horrible, pulling the factory 22 degrees down to 14. The easiest way to find out is see what timing you have with them connected then try again after you disconnect them. The factory tune shouldn't go above 23 degrees and at sea level in warm weather 25 is where most people are getting ping on our motors.

Re: Question about DYNO NUMBERS

I'm not sure, but I think the knock sensors can pull timing without actually having detonation. Mine was tuned to 24 degrees with a 12.8 A/F ratio measued at the O2 sensors (which I understand would be around 13.2 if measured at the exhaust tip). I gained 14 rwhp.

Re: Question about DYNO NUMBERS

You need to review Ricksterman tuning with predator posts if you haven't. I am getting 19 - 20 degrees of the r50c predator tune set to +5...any more and the computer pulls mine back to 17. BTW: using the modified factory tune +5 timing the mach maintained more timing 21-22 so there is more available. The predator tune manages the AFR much better than factory so says the dyno.

hp/tq numbers are in the signature

Re: Question about DYNO NUMBERS

I have my knock sensors turned off and yes they can pull timing without any detonation.
