Of everything I've put on mine, the Hankook Evo V12s were the ones I found quiet, smooth and responsive as well as being good in the rain. The downside is that when they are worn down they become evil and will bite you hard on wet roads. My next set will be either Firestones new Indy 500 Firehawks (really a Bridgestone rebadged) or the Cooper RS3s.

You'll get a million different answers. I had the T1S and T1R Toyo's and thought they were great. Excellent grip when your putting pedal to metal. I would keep buying them except they only make a couple sizes in 17's anymore. Right around stock size. Don't bother with BF Goodrich Comp 2's. They're junk.

Toyos Proxes 4 plus is a nice driver tire as well.
Although you titled this with H or R ratings, R is not a speed rating simply the fact that it is a radial tire, while H is a speed rating of 130 mph, V is a speed rating of 140 and so forth.

I have been running Nitto 555 on my Mustangs for years. They are the best bang for the buck. If you're on an unlimited budget go Michelin Pilot Super Sport.

As said above, you'll get a million different answers. A lot depends upon how you will drive the vehicle.

For spirited road/track driving (road course, not drag strip), I liked my Bridgestone Potenza RE760's best out of all the tires I've put on the Mach. I've also run Goodrich KDW II's (great traction but noisy as they wear), Sumitomo HTR II's (lousy traction and noisy), Goodrich G-Force Sports (current tires and almost as good as my Bridgestones), and the stock Goodyears (fergetaboutem...).

For everyday driving in all weather conditions, I've run all sorts of different tires on various vehicles but the tires I'm happiest with now and run on 3 of my vehicles are the Continental Extreme contact DWS tires. I've got them on a Focus, an AWD Fusion and on my Explorer, and I'm very happy with the performance in all weather conditions.

Jeff, I'm running the DW on the Mach right now (Bridgestone no longer makes a 275 17) and as much as I like the DWS on the Fusion, the DW is nowhere near the tire the Potenzas are.

Thanks SLO-RIDE. After looking at what choices there were out there,
im gonna go with the Michelins in spring as well. Its more $$, but i've been down that road too many times where you save $50 but after 3-4 months I kick myself for cheaping out and wish I would have just did it right the first time around.

If you don''t put a lot of miles on your car, I would stay away from the Michlens as they are notorious for dry rot. Personally the tiny bit of performance gain in the Pilots isn't worse the extra money and short life due to dry rot.

Thanks bris09. Hadn't run across the dry rot from any reviews ive seen.( Read alot of them) I had a set of conti dws's on a Focus years ago. Were very good on that. Might have to rethink(probably overthink) this one. Oh well its a new year. Start early they say. Thanks Ron

Anyone have a comment on whether the Continental DWS is any different than the DW version OTHER than the S being the snow rating? Same exact tire just minus the snow rating as far as ride characteristics? Thanks Ron

Re: Quiet stock tires / 245x45x17 . H or R rating

I have Mickey Thompson Street Comps on mine (summer performance tires). So far, they have been very quiet. I haven't been to the track to compare them against the BF Goodrich Gforce Comp 2's I previously had though. I just never made it this past summer. I don't get out in the rain, so no info there either lol. Big help, huh? Sorry lol. The BFG's were great in the rain, in case that matters. Mine are 275's in front and 315's in the rear, but I can't imagine the stock size would be different.

The DWS is considered an ultra all season tire and the DW is an Extreme Performance summer only tire. If you don't push the car hard through the corners and drive in light snow, the DWS is a good choice. They do really when on the Fusion in a couple inches of snow but I wouldn't expect the same on the Mach. If the car is never driven in the snow but is in the rain the DW is a good tire. The issue I have with them is there is a delay in turn in. If you have never run a really good tire you might not notice it but after running the Bridgestone Potentzas there is a very noticeable difference. Unfortunately Bridgestone no longer makes a 275 40 17 which is why I am running the DW. Looking at getting some Hoosier A7s for autox events so the drop off in performance of the DW is not a big deal. For normal spirited driving they are more than capable.

I noticed that when I was looking for tires. Seems like there are quite a few not making 275's and up for 17" wheels anymore. I suppose it's for lack of sales maybe..? This is a real bummer lol. I know there will always be Nittos, but I hate their tires.

Yeah, I noticed that when I was looking for tires 4 years ago. The 17" selection was slim and quite afew only offered the stock 245 sizes. If you moved up to 18", the selection was a lot better.

For anyone looking. Tirerack is closing out the Conti DW extreme summer versions at about $111 per tire (245-45-17zr45's). Not sure if a "new and improved" version is in the wings when the weather comes around for everyone. Thought about jumping on a set of 4, but biggest complaint ive read is the sidewall is soft. And I believe everything I read, DON'T YOU????? Ron

Reviving and old thread here. I did just purchase the Continental Extreme
DWS06's in 245/45/zr17. Conti has a $70 visa card rebate thru 4/15/17. I
found that Discount Tire has a $50 off set of four special thru 3/31/17. They are shipping out this week. $512 + $70 rebate. $442 for 4 new shoes. Such a deal!!! Ron

This x10 the sidewalls will crack and rot. The tire store will just laugh at you if you want a refund.

You'll have to let us know what you think of them. They do really well on the Fusion. Have a few thousand miles on them and the S is still deep. Interested to see at what tread depth it disappears.
