Re: Steering Shaft Creeking

This was great. Thank You it fixed my click. Tip: If you use the prothan bushings make sure to use a lot of wd-40 and they will slide right in.

I have the same problem on my 03 mach1. Previous owner had the front control arm bushings replaced under warranty. Should i try and change out the sleeves?

Re: Steering Shaft Creeking

Replace the Rack Mount busings with some PROTHANE ones and you should be fine. I personally do not think that you have to replace the sleeves, but if you wanna do them anyways, they are cheap enough..go right ahead. The PROTHANE urethane rack mount bushings are normally under $20 for the whole set and they WILL get rid of the creak in your steering.

Have to agree with 006 on this. An update on my sleeve swap several posts back: The noise was stopped, came back after a couple months and got even worse than before. The tighter I torqued the nut (I think i went over 100ft/lbs.) the worse it got. I put urethane bushings in and torqued to spec and the noise went away. It looks to me like the stock rubber bushings allow the washer to crush up against the sleeve end and this is where the noise comes from. The new urethane bushings are much harder and don't appear to allow this contact, or at least don't allow any excess movement of the sleeve to produce the noise. And the steering is night and day improved compared to the old bushings. NO driveability penalties for a daily driver, can't feel any harsh vibrations in the wheel at all, feels just like stock only with MUCH better response. Do this!

Re: Steering Shaft Creeking

Would it make a difference if you went with the offset ones for a lowered car? I'm thinking not, but just want to make sure.

Re: Steering Shaft Creeking

I have been dealing with this problem since i got the car. Didn't bother me to much, but never noticed this sticky. I'll probably replace the bushings next weekend. Thanks for the right up.

Re: Steering Shaft Creeking

Where are you guys getting these upgraded urethane bushings at? I assume Ford does not sell them as I can not find them anywhere on the Ford parts site.

Maximum Motorsports also carries afdtermarket steering rack bushings, both aluminum and urethane.

Re: Steering Shaft Creeking

Looks like Steeda only carries the aluminum bushings.

Is this the right MM part?

Re: Steering Shaft Creeking

It could be one of several possible things making the noise, In the Mach's it is most likely the rack bushings as everyone is saying. In my GT and also my Bullitt I was getting a similar creaking to the one you describe and I replaced the rack bushings with Poly ones and that did not solve my noise, It actually turned out to be outer tie rod end in both cases. However on my Mach 1, same noise and I got it to go away by simply slightly loosening the rack bushing bolt. But you could always replace the rack bushings just for the heck of it, they are cheap and easy to do and yes make sure you replace the front and back bushings you can also shorten the metal sleeve slightly like some TSBs tell you.

Re: Steering Shaft Creeking

The solution is the rack mount fasteners. Ford actually had a silent recall on this. The factory installed bushings were slightly too long and won't tighten properly. Here are the FORD part numbers:

E5DZ 3F640B Inusulators (need 4)
E5DZ 3K620A Bracket (need 2)

**IMPORTANT** torgue to 52 ft. lbs. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN

This will elimate the front end creeking from the steering. You can hear it mostly with the engine off, unlock steering, and moving the steering wheel left and right. Also when making slow turns.

Re: Steering Shaft Creeking

I finally found the creaking on mine. It was the passenger side tie rod end.

Re: Steering Shaft Creeking

I upgraded to Poly bushings about 2 years ago and the creaking started getting worse. i thought it might be noise from worn tie rods so I checked it out yesterday. I had my brother turn the wheel side to side with the car off while I felt around the suspension and steering components for play. turns out it was coming from the rack mounting points.

I skipped the step of grinding the new sleeves, and the rubbing against the metal washers was causing the noise for me. I didn't want to rip up the bushing while trying to remove it so I added a polyurethane shim between it and the washer about 1//4" thick. Noise is no more.

for all of you that are planning on doing this fix, DON'T FORGET TO GRIND THE SLEEVE.
