Operation Tin Man

Well this build has taken MUCH longer than planned and now its time to get er done....Well starting tomorrow as long as the machine shop lives up to their word! Im under the gun on this one for sure! Landlord sold the house and Im supposed to be out on Feb 17th. I believe I have everthing about as prepped as I can. Gasket surfaced all cleaned up. Should have All the arp hardware gasket etcs to put it all together. Modified the pump sprayer to prime the motor. I did ALMOST have another Issue I ordered the wrong side bolts...but I caught I on Sat and the right ones will be here today! This will be my FIRST engine build! (not counting the lawnmower from high school) Ive been reading for the past 2 months and hopefully have the knowledge needed. ANY TIPS are appreciated! The plans are for CG Fab TT hotside within the next 6 months. Well heres whats going in the heart:

CP/Mod max Flattop pistons .020 over ~10.7:1 compression
SS rings
.200 h13 tools wrist pins with spiral locks
Manley H-beam Arp 2000 rod bolts
Clevite H series coated mains and rod bearings
All ARP Hardware
Boundary Billet Oil pump gears
Stock freshen heads

Im not going to degree the stock cams at this point because I am short on time and funds!
If All goes well Sunday should be the day!
Ill get some pics up of the tear down soon

Re: Operation Tin Man

Good luck man on this, I have never broken into the motor yet,
That sucks your on a crunch time with this being your first time.
for sure post up pictures. I hope all goes smooth for you, but you know how it is with modding cars. Always something
Do you happen to have a plan B if you have to get everything moved, because something happens? I hope you get it done, but I also would have a plan b just in case it does take longer than planned.

Re: Operation Tin Man

THERE IS NO PLAN B!
I was supposed to go move to NJ before Xmas and then this engine build happened. All my stuff is in storage. Machine shop had to clean the block up more than expected so I had to return piston yadaa Hopefully all the kinks have already be figured out. Cost me a month already.

Why in the world do you want to move to NJ??????
just playing my wifie is from there, I was amazed that I had to pay to get out of that state while I was there a couple different times. Probably will be going up there sometime in the summer again. For sure different than Texas.

Thanx You'd think it would go smoothly after spending $6k! But I know thats never the case! After all the bumps in the road makes me wonder if I should have jus changed the head gasket and got on down the road.

Im born and raised at the Jersey Shore (Seaside Park) Left when I ws 18 and been all over since. All the family is still there...nieces and nephews are growing up to fast! Figured I give NJ another shot. I loved living in TX. I was in Houston. Wouln't mind living there again or Dallas area. NJ is such a police state gonna be hard going back to that!

It seems to be part of this game of cars, I've wanted to burn the Cobra down a few times during this project I've had going on or just let the shop have replace it with stock stuff. the qa1 K-member was a all day affair for me. had to put on, then take off, put on, then take off and etc. to get it to fit right. I truly almost gave up after mulp attempts to get it on correct. I had to grind out a bunch of different spots and I was on my last leg attempt to get it on when it went on. I was just getting so pissed with it. TKat13 heard all about it, but said he had the same problems I did with his UPR one. if I would have went with coil overs, I would have just did the MM one, but did not go that route. Yes and you would think with all that amount everything would go smooth but it just doesn't
but you are where you are on this, so lets get r done.

I live north of Houston in Willis if you ever been up in that area, lot better than living in the city.

If I have learned anything, if it is going to the machine shop, double the time they quote you! Custom parts, double the time that is quoted. You will feel better in the end and not be so pissed when 4 months later you are still waiting on your custom torque converter. lol

Re: Operation Tin Man

Yeah I feel you there Tkat!
Well they still were not finished adding weight to the crank and wouldnt be finished until tomorrow morning. The guy working on it had a scheduled day off today. I took everything but the crank. I just got the main studs, bearing and caps in place im about to get them torqued down and get my measurements. Then Im going to start filing the rings and assembling the pistons. If I get that all done by the AM I should get my crank and be rolling!

HAHA Im assembling the engine in the kitchen. Gonna be funny when they come for the home inspection on FRI if its still there!

Had a lil issue today when I got my heads from the shop I realized that they removed the cam bolts for some reason. So I spent a few hours tracking some down. Luckily the local dealer had 4 left!

I briefly considered building an engine in my dining room aka "parts bin", but then remembered I was up 3 flights of stairs.

Re: Operation Tin Man

When I Moved from West Palm beach to Houston I packed my streetbike up in 9 totes. I got to houston and moved in with a buddy in his apt. It was like 110 degree out and 100% humidity so I decided to build the bike on the 2nd floor balcony. I had it all together and was trying to figure out some wiring issues and the apt manager walk past and saw me. She did a double take and was like WTF?!?! She asked how i was going to get it down and I told here I was going to ride it down the stairs! She told me to get it off there now!! It was actually pretty easy getting it down the stairs. Just one turn to get to the stairs then a straight shot. A week later I took that bike on a 3200 mile rd trip to Montana!

Re: Operation Tin Man

DOH! I FUNKED UP! Cost me a day and 2 head gaskets. Forgot to install the dowel pins in the heads got it all torqued down and timing installed when I realized. And I was JUST about to be in good shape! Well had to order new head gaskets didnt want to chance reusing they other ones. Should be here in the morn then back at it. should go much faster this time around. Well at least I caught my mistake. I was putting the header on the drivers side happen to look at the head gasket and saw a lil assembly lube in the part line at one spot. That got me thinking and yeah DOH!!
