anyone bend a mainshaft?

Think i found my vibration. Stuck just the yoke in the trans ran it upto 130 and vib is still there.

So next question, anyone have a straight mainshaft laying around?

Re: anyone bend a mainshaft?

So on further inspection now the speedo stopped working??? (Thinking when i just had the yoke in the trans and took it upto 140 mph that it had damaged the sensor) Head scratcher. Drain the trans oil and found the speedo trigger wheel exploded ?

Backround on the car. I bought it used at 36k miles it previously had nitrous and he drag raced it. Since owning the car i have over 200 drag passes and about 3k miles on road courses between hpde, hsax, and tt events. So i kinda expected some issues but not this one.

Re: anyone bend a mainshaft?

That's a really strange part to fail. Typically there is zero pressure on it. It's lightly pressed into place and then a snap ring behind it. It would have had to come in contact with the case or sensor to break, unless it was already cracked when installed.
So that leads me to believe that cluster shaft is bent as you thought, and/or the bearings are toast.
I'd lean towards buying a second transmission, installing it, and then tearing into this one to see what happened and so you'll have spare parts.
I've rebuilt a couple of these, so if you did want to tear into it I could help depending on my schedule.

Re: anyone bend a mainshaft?

My father's bent on his 03 Cobra. When we finally discovered it we were like what?? Never seen that before! Aren't those shafts forged? I would have thought it would crack before bending.

No way I'd pay $1K for a used TR3650. Maybe if it were freshly rebuilt with upgraded input shaft.

Re: anyone bend a mainshaft?

Trans is out on the floor tailhousing off and broke my snap ring pliers so will finish dissasembly another day
If the mainshaft is bent i am thinking its not much but just looking at the magnet i am thinking the speedo gear was just a bad luck and timing

Re: anyone bend a mainshaft?

I would love to change it up but the budget is kinda killed in the last 2 years.

Last year we had a oopsie at pittsburgh roadcourse snd this year i built the rear end up and changed to 4.10

Re: anyone bend a mainshaft?

Update.
Totally dissasembled trans. No bearing issues mainshaft isnt bent that i could find, input wasnt bent or twisted. All bearings fine. No signs of a reason for a vibration. The only thing i found was the broken speedo gear (1 piece missing) bearing endplay was all at the max of the spec. I dont have shims small enough so its going back in for now. Maybe the speedo gear missing piece was the high speed vibration?

Spare tranny i got for parts i tore down (01 trans with the taller 5th gear ) found the reverse syncros Hammered, the fork pads broke and the syncro slider ate into the shift fork. I got carbon fiber syncros for this trans since it would be better on a road course. I am gonna weld up the fork and install carbon fiber syncros i got for it. When its ready it will go in the car

Re: anyone bend a mainshaft?

Lol the problem with being a mechanic. The parts tranny i got was in pretty good shape other than the reverse syncro. So i wanted to rebuild it the fork is worn so i will weld it up. I was in a hurry and i didnt have away to check it between centers. So when it comes out the second time i will borrow some lathe time to check it. Better was in a hurry, i got more than a few projects going right now.
